Regularities of soil deformation under the influence of wheels of agricultural cars

Journal Articles & Books
Enero, 2015
Belarus

Permanent exploitation of agricultural machinery and equipment supposes excessive compression of soil cover by undercarriage, especially by wheels, which leads to crop yield decline, high energy consumption and decrease of productivity. The main goal of the research presented in the article appears determination of the dependencies between soil reluctance and compaction, reflecting peculiarities of the curve of depression of the deformation agent in soil. The research analyzes development of the core of compression during compression of stamping tool.

A comparative analysis of global cropping systems models and maps

Policy Papers & Briefs
Diciembre, 2014

This study aims to explore and quantify systematic similarities and differences between four major global cropping systems products: the dataset of monthly irrigated and rainfed crop areas around the year 2000 (MIRCA2000), the spatial production allocation model (SPAM), the global agroecological zone (GAEZ) dataset, and the M3 dataset developed by Monfreda, Ramankutty, and Foley.

Development of a Historical Multi-Year Land Cover Classification Incorporating Wildfire Effects

Peer-reviewed publication
Diciembre, 2014

Land cover change impacts ecosystem function across the globe. The use of land cover data is vital in the detection of these changes over time; however, most available land cover products, such as the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD), are produced relatively infrequently. The most recent NLCD at the time of this research was produced in 2006 and does not adequately reflect the impact of land cover changes that have occurred since, including the occurrence of two large wildfires in 2008 in our study area.

Vertical Distribution of Soil Organic Carbon Density in Relation to Land Use/Cover, Altitude and Slope Aspect in the Eastern Himalayas

Peer-reviewed publication
Diciembre, 2014

In-depth understanding about the vertical distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) density is crucial for carbon (C) accounting, C budgeting and designing appropriate C sequestration strategies. We examined the vertical distribution of SOC density under different land use/land cover (LULC) types, altitudinal zones and aspect directions in a montane ecosystem of Bhutan. Sampling sites were located using conditioned Latin hypercube sampling (cLHS) scheme. Soils were sampled based on genetic horizons.

pattern of distribution and diversity of avifauna over an urbanizing tropical landscape

Kenya

An investigation was done to determine the occurrence and composition of avian fauna community in the urbanizing city of Nairobi, Kenya. We conducted bird counts in sample sites randomly distributed over the Nairobi landscape within a two-year period. The proportion of seven different land cover types derived from within a 500 m radius of classified satellite image described the habitat condition of each sample site.

Agricultural expansion: land use shell game in the U.S. Northern Plains

Estados Unidos de América

Land area planted to row crops has expanded globally with increased demand for food and biofuels. Agricultural expansion in the Dakota Prairie Pothole Region (DPPR), USA affects a variety of agricultural and non-agricultural land-use types, including grasslands and wetlands that provide critical wildlife habitat and other ecosystem services. The purpose of this study was to quantify recent changes in rural land cover/land use, analyze trends, and interpret results in relation to climate, agronomic practice, and ethanol production.

Relationships between land cover and the surface urban heat island: seasonal variability and effects of spatial and thematic resolution of land cover data on predicting land surface temperatures

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2014

We investigated the seasonal variability of the relationships between land surface temperature (LST) and land use/land cover (LULC) variables, and how the spatial and thematic resolutions of LULC variables affect these relationships. We derived LST data from Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) images acquired from four different seasons.
