The Melting Himalayas: Cascading Effects of Climate Change on Water, Biodiversity, and Livelihoods

Reports & Research
Myanmar

Abstract:
"The Greater Himalayas hold the largest mass of ice outside polar regions and are the source of
the 10 largest rivers in Asia. Rapid reduction in the volume of Himalayan glaciers due to climate change is
occurring. The cascading effects of rising temperatures and loss of ice and snow in the region are affecting, for
example, water availability (amounts, seasonality), biodiversity (endemic species, predator–prey relations),
ecosystem boundary shifts (tree-line movements, high-elevation ecosystem changes), and global feedbacks

Reports & Research
Brasil

A major challenge of Brazilian municipalities is to harmonize urban growth with the provision of public service. São Carlos, a municipality in the State of São Paulo also tries to solve this issue. The lack of urban planning coupled with the absence of occupation control measures promotes the soil sealing, which is responsible for the flooding in the valley bottoms. Considering this scenario, the object of study of this dissertation is the creek watershed Santa Maria do Leme. This watershed, even undeveloped, suffers with the occurrence of flooding in the region of its mouth.

Multidisciplinary approach to assess the water self-depuration characteristics of Suquía River (Córdoba, Argentina)

Journal Articles & Books
Argentina

We analyzed the following characteristics of water self-depuration capacity along a polluted river (Suquía River) in Argentina: a) abundance of microbial metabolic groups, b) cover and type of vegetation, and c) type and concentration of soil and sediment humic substances. The objective was to establish the modifications of water self-depuration characteristics of the polluted sites in comparison to a reference site, in order to provide basic data for ecological restoration programs.

Accumulation of water rights in Peru

Journal Articles & Books
Perú
América central
América del Sur

In Latin America, water governance is facing the problem of rising demand for water resources, increased hydrological variability in a context of climate change, proliferating contamination and thus —in general— increasing scarcity of water in terms of quantity, quality, and opportunity. This creates competition and conflicts among stakeholders. The issue coincides with the urgent international problem of concentration of land, which is heavily intertwined with the concentration of water in the hands of the few.

Parte I: Desenvolvimento e análise de sensibilidade.

Journal Articles & Books
