Sorghum production in Nigeria: Opportunities, constraints, and recommendations

Diciembre, 2021
Global

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) production has considerable socio-economic values in sub-Saharan Africa for food security and to serve the increased industrial demands due to high population pressure and climate change. However, the production and productivity of the crop are yet to be expounded in Nigeria for economic gains. Therefore, the objective of this study was to present the current opportunities and constraints to sorghum production in Nigeria.

Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA): Environment and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for Pilot of Climate Smart Agricultural Innovations and Climate Information Service Technologies in Ethiopia

Diciembre, 2021
Ethiopia

This Environment and Social Management Pan (ESMP) has been developed by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) to clarify (i) the measures that will be taken during the implementation of project activities to eliminate or offset adverse E&S impacts, or to reduce them to acceptable levels; and (ii) actions needed to implement these measures during the implementation of the Accelerating Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project activities in Ethiopia.

Goat and Sheep technology toolkit catalogue: Clearinghouse technical report series 017

Diciembre, 2021
Global

This catalogue describes a series of proven livestock technologies that promote increased productivity and transformation of small ruminant production in Africa. It is developed through a collaborative effort from the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) Program that seeks to increase stakeholder use of proven agricultural technologies, and its Small Livestock Compact project partners.

Climate Security Policy Coherence and Awareness Analysis Report: West Africa and Senegal

Diciembre, 2021
Senegal

This report aims to contribute to this need by conducting a climate security policy coherence and awareness assessment of policy and strategy documents extracted from climate-and peace and security-related sectors produced at the national level in Senegal. It will do so by making use of a policy assessment framework developed specifically for the purpose of assessing coherence and climate security-sensitivity.

Sustainable development outcomes of livelihood diversification in small-scale fisheries

Diciembre, 2021
Global

Livelihood diversification is increasingly central to policy advice and investments in rural development and fisheries management. For small-scale fishing communities in low- to middle-income countries, more diverse livelihoods are generally hypothesized to reduce fishing pressure and vulnerabilities to external shocks and adverse trends while enabling people to construct routes out of poverty. Yet, evidence of impacts from livelihood diversification in small-scale fisheries remains sparse.

Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA): Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for Pilot of Climate Smart Agricultural Innovations and Climate Information Service Technologies in Ethiopia

Diciembre, 2021
Ethiopia

The environmental and social screening exercise conducted on proposed CSA demonstration plots confirmed a range of Environmental and Social (E&S) risks, which if not mitigated, could cause harm to people and the environment. Based on these findings, this ESMP is prepared to clarify (i) the measures that will be taken during the implementation of project activities to eliminate or offset adverse E&S impacts, or to reduce them to acceptable levels; and (ii) actions needed to implement these measures.

Improving efficiency of knowledge and technology diffusion using community seed banks and farmer-to-farmer extension: experiences from Malawi

Diciembre, 2021
Malawi

Background: Agri-innovations are mostly delivered to farmers through private and public sector-led institutions around the world, with various degrees of success in Malawi. These distribution systems, on the other hand, do not meet everyone’s production and productivity needs, particularly those of smallholder farmers. Alternative gap-flling systems are therefore required. Over the course of 7 years, we performed two studies in Malawi to assess the efciency of integrated farmer led agri-innovation delivery mechanisms, in order to advise programming and delivery improvements.

Investigating pathways for agricultural innovation at scale: Case studies from India

Diciembre, 2021
India

This is one of three country studies on Innovation Pathways in Agri-food Systems, managed by the Commission for Sustainable Agriculture Intensification (CoSAI). The three studies use a common analytical framework to generate lessons on factors leading to successful innovation pathways, to guide future investment.

Can the right composition and diversity of farmed species improve food security among smallholder farmers?

Diciembre, 2021
Global

Food security and livelihoods among smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa are often constrained by limited farm resource endowment. It can be difficult to improve resource endowment given barriers such as low land availability and the unaffordability of agricultural inputs, so here we ask whether farmers can gain a better return on their resources through optimizing their farm strategy in terms of the composition and/or diversity of crop and livestock species raised.

Climate Security Policy Coherence and Awareness Analysis Report: East Africa and Kenya

Diciembre, 2021
Kenya

This report summarises a climate security policy coherence and awareness assessment of policy and strategy documents extracted from climate-and peace and security-related sectors produced at the national level in Kenya. It makes use of a policy assessment framework developed specifically for the purpose of assessing coherence and climate security-sensitivity.

Farm level analysis of smallholder farmers implementing Sustainable Intensification technologies in Malawi

Diciembre, 2021
Malawi

Agricultural systems in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) are highly under pressure as they are required to meet the demand of food without further damage the natural resources. At the same time, smallholder farmers that have to deal with space and resource constraints are asked to increase their agricultural productivity in circumstances where often inputs are difficult or expensive to obtain.
