Sierra Leone is one of the least developed countries in the world and is still recovering from a civil war that ended in 2002. Increasingly, the Sierra Leonean government seeks to attract foreign investors through providing opportunities for large-scale land leases for the development of agribusiness.

The buying up of farmland by international investors is viewed highly critically. However, sweeping judgements could be inappropriate, as our author demonstrates with survey results from Ethiopia and Uganda.

Utaran began work on the Sustainable Access to Land Equality (SALE) project to ensure transparency and accountability in land governance in December 2012, in partnership with CARE Internaional UK and Manusher Jonno Foundaion (MJF).

Uttaran (www.uttaran.net) is a local organisation (Bangladesh) working with vulnerable landowners i.e. women, widow, indigenous, minority and landless people to promote access to land. Uttaran is implementing a project titled, Sustainable Access to Land Equality-SALE' with support of European Union.
