Tsetse and trypanosomiasis control in West Africa, Uganda and Ethiopia: ILRI's role in the field
This book chapter was to tackle the mission of International Laboratory for Research on Animal Disease (ILRAD): discuss AAT and East Coast fever. As a result, a large body of research on AAT was conducted over 30 years: genetics, breeding and immunology research. This chapter reviews the earlier field work of ILRAD followed by that of International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) after 1994 in East and West Africa, including the engagement of those institutions with regional and global initiatives.
From sub-IDOs to Impact: A Guide to Developing Gender-related Policy Indicators in CCAFS
The Gender and Social Inclusion (GSI) unit of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) is dedicated to the advancement of gender-responsive climate policies. This document is a guide to best practices for developing indicators to track progress toward CCAFS gender-related policy sub-intermediate development outcomes (sub-IDOs) and gender activities at project and national levels.
CRP 2020 Reviews: Grain Legumes and Dryland Cereals (GLDC)
The primary purpose of the review is to assess the extent to which the GLDC is delivering quality of science and demonstrating effectiveness in relation to its theories of change (ToCs) in the approved proposal. Its objectives are to fulfill CGIAR’s obligations for accountability and donor support for international agricultural research; assess the effectiveness and evolution of research program’s work; and provide an opportunity for GLDC to generate insights, including lessons for future CGIAR research modalities.
Process and benefits of community-led multiple use water services: comparing two communities in South Africa
The African Water Facility, together with the Water Research Commission, South Africa, as its implementing agent, supported the demonstration project Operationalizing community-led Multiple Use water Services (MUS) in South Africa.
Monitoring and prediction of pasture quality and productivity using planet scope satellite data for sustainable livestock production systems in Colombia
As the population increases, demand for food increases too, which has led to large-scale land conversion to improve livestock production in Colombia. Fulfilling these criteria of increasing demand in a sustainable way is a challenge and remote sensing data provides an accurate method to support this task. In this study, Planet Scope multispectral satellite datasets and coincident field measurements acquired over test fields in the study area (PatÃa) of September 2018 was used.
Citizen’s science approach to climate smart and nutrition sensitive seed value chains for food and nutrition security in Uganda and Ethiopia
Local communities currently have limited access to information and the diversity of planting materials that would allow them to diversify their production systems to cope with unpredictable weather and stabilize their livelihoods. There are currently limited and scattered mechanisms in place to share and increase the diversity of farmers’ varieties beyond the local level.
Effective altruism as an ethical lens on research priorities
Effective altruism is an ethical framework for identifying the greatest potential benefits from investments. Here, we apply effective altruism concepts to maximize research benefits through identification of priority stakeholders, pathosystems, and research questions and technologies.
