    There is a growing recognition that Community Development Agreements (CDA) - if effectively implemented - can promote long-term development benefits for communities affected by mining operations as well as improve relations between extractive companies and communities. Section 139 (1) of Sierra Leone’s Mines and Minerals Act, 2009 provides that small scale or large scale mining licence holders are required to have and implement a CDA with primary host communities if their approved mining operations will or does exceed certain stipulated limits set out in the Act.

Despite abundant the country still faced loaming social, economic and environmental challenges that negatively impact lives of ordinary citizens. In many Africa states; competition for the control over natural resources wealth has led to cycle of armed conflict, suppression of political dissidents and the violation of human rights.

    National Land Coalitions (NLCs) work towards the recognition, defence, protection and redistribution of land rights at national level. They build upon frameworks on land tenure developed and agreed by different regional and intergovernmental institutions.     Despite its contributions to the development of the country, the mining sector in Sierra Leone, has been attributed to a multitude of impacts on the environment. This article focuses on assessing the environmental impacts of mining in mining edge communities in Sierra Leone. A survey of 360 people from three mining edge communities (Sierra Rutile Limited (SRL), Bonthe district; Octea Mining Company (OMC), Kono district and Sierra Leone Mining Company (SLM), Port Loko district) was conducted.

    La manière dont les entreprises agro-industrielles et industrielles investissent les espaces agricoles des pays en développement attire l’attention sur une nouvelle forme d’espace géographique : l’interstice. Relevant d’un cadre mondialisé pour ce qui est de leurs activités et de leur structure financière, ces entreprises créent néanmoins des espaces locaux verrouillés « exorbitant du territoire ordinaire » et, donc, totalement contraires à l’idée d’ouverture et d’aplatissement. Les populations qui reçoivent ces entreprises doivent vivre dans les interstices de la firme.
