ACIAR funded a collaborative project between research organisations in Southeast Asia for ILRI and regional partners to explore new ways to control helminth parasites in the tropics. The project aimed to increase small ruminant production in Southeast Asia by controlling internal parasites, which are one of the major constraints to sheep and goat production in the tropics. Control of internal parasites also provides an avenue for general improvement in husbandry methods.

Abstract: The article attempts to define the relevant yardsticks that can be used to delineate the end of the transition process or, alternatively, a second stage in the post-socialist economic transformation into market capitalism. A first benchmark is EU accession, but it does not apply to non accession transitional economies. Moreover, a delay is going to appear between accession and the full benefit of common policies – a second transition period will open in May 2004. Convergence criteria are likely to postpone the end of transition for decades, if not for ever.

The aim of the research was to estimate emissions and greenhouse gas reductions resulting in the full life cycle of biofuels and to determine what effect on the reduction of GHG emissions will have when taking into account the additional issue related to the implementation of ILUC. It was found that the production of bioethanol, ensuring compliance with the criteria of sustainable production and acquisition (including ILUC) GHG emission reduction ≥ 50% is possible with wheat and corn crops production with traditional ploughing with crop residues incorporation.
