This report is on output of the programme element selected to activities on reduction of post-harvest food losses- contained in the approved work programme and budget of the Commission for the biennium I986-1987. Its main objective is to report to the eighth meeting of the Technical Preparatory Committee of the Whole, to the thirteenth meeting of the Conference of ministers and to the General Assembly on measures taken by African member stats to reduce post-harvest food losses over the period 1975-1985.

Les pertes après récoltes dans les pays en développement, notamment en Afrique ont fait l'objet d'un examen approprié lors ce la septième session extraordinaire de l'Assemblée générale en 1975. L'Assemblée avait adopte la résolution 3362 (SVII) qui, entre autres, invitait à réduire de façon considérable les pertes après récoltes et recommandait que celles-ci soient réduites d'au moins 50 p. 106 avant la fin de 1985.

This paper focuses on the severity of the African food situation was demanding programmes and plans of action such as the Lagos Plan of Action (1980) and the FAO African Food Plan (1980), the twin problems of post harvest food losses and of arable land lost to urban development in Africa were considered for joint action.
