Endangered Ecosystems of Northern Tanzania (EenT)

General

This activity intends to strengthen landscape scale conservation in the northern geographical landscape of Tanzania, in support of the USAID/Tanzania Natural Resource Management (NRM) Activity strategy for 2014-2018. This activity will contribute to biodiversity and climate change results in support of achieving the overall NRM Project goal of Stewardship of Natural Resources Improved. Key objectives of U.S. Government (USG) assistance are sustaining critical wildlife habitats, reducing wildlife poaching, reversing land degradation, restoring watersheds, and improving community livelihoods through conservation enterprises. Activities also target sustainable agriculture and agroforestry, trade and private sector initiatives such as, tourism, honey and coffee. USAID/Tanzania strives to improve Natural Resource Management (NRM) through livelihood driven approaches in targeted ecosystems, river basins and landscapes. Supporting a landscape scale approach, the USAID NRM project involves developing and implementing key national environmental policies, and supporting local rights to resources by expanding community based conservation as a tool for shared benefits and decision-making over local resources. The project has a strong focus on engaging women and youth and maximizing local engagement to create greater sustainability.

IDH Landscapes Program

General

The Central Highlands of Vietnam, including the Provinces of Lam Dong, Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Gia Lai and Kon Tum,) play a key role in the production of several agricultural and forestry commodities such as coffee, pepper, rubber, cashew, tea and cocoa. The three issues of water, deforestation and land degradation are very much interlinked with each other and IDH plays an important role in clarifying these relationships in a systematic way. In relation to this aspect, IDH fosters cross-sectoral and public-private cooperation to address issues systematically. Addressing the behavior of agricultural commodity producers needs is complemented by changes in public policies and regulation that are equally steering and (dis) incentivizing sustainable practices. Moreover, questions about the long-term viability of certain crops in (dry) areas of the Central Highlands requires integrated landscape management and better zonal planning. In this landscape, IDH adds value by bringing in the elements of public-private cooperation, cross-sectoral cooperation, and by addressing the interrelatedness of various natural resource issues.

Indigenous and Afro-Colombian women contributing to biodiversity conservation

General

Many indigenous and Afro-Colombian groups live in the departments of Chocó and Antioquia in the biodiversity-rich northwest region of Colombia. National and regional protected areas there are particularly exposed to pressure from the mining industry. The project therefore supported the development of land use planning strategies for indigenous territories, strengthened community production systems and identified opportunities for the sustainable use of biodiversity, particularly in the case of women. Traditional knowledge was thus preserved and made more valuable for the departments’ inhabitants. The project also trained and strengthened indigenous people, who can then exercise their territorial rights and become more involved in decision-making processes. The interaction between nature reserves and areas managed by indigenous and Afro-Colombian groups was also supported, contributing to the exploitation of synergies and the sustainable development of the region.

Land Potential Knowledge System (LandPKS)

General

(USAID Economic Growth, Education and Environment (E3)): The Project will support long-term, sustainable increases in land productivity, climate change adaptation, and biodiversity conservation by providing a data collection system using mobile phones to evaluate the effectiveness of management actions and to strengthen the utility and cost-effectiveness of monitoring of natural resource management actions for monitoring FTF investments.Increasing gender equality by providing women farmers improved access to knowledge and information.~Results will contribute to climate-resilience, food security, and improved natural resource management.Geospatial analysis and decision tools will support land use planning, climate change adaptation strategies and targeted interventions by government authorities and decision-makers.~National Resource Management practices will be improved with evidence-based, through mobile technology and increasing the ability of farmers to compare and share the successes and failures of new technologies.
