Land cover change in any ecosystem vary in space and time. The study analyzed spatial-temporal land cover change to predict forest degradation pressure points in Eastern Mau Forest Reserve. The study objectives were to determine types and amount of spatial-temporal land cover change; land cover change drivers and; forest resources use sustainability. The study used mixed sample survey design involving purposive sampling of spatial data and cluster sampling of forest resource use data. Primary data included ground control points, field validation data and forest resource use data.

Sri Lanka

The island of Sri Lanka is free from serious natural hazards such as volcanic activity and earthquakes resulting from climatic extremes, but there are impacts of many natural disasters, such as landslides, floods and droughts, the intensity and frequency of which are increasing due to human interventions. Some areas of Sri Lanka are also periodically subject to cyclones that occur due to climatic conditions and geographical locations. Land degradation denotes all natural or anthropogenic processes that diminish or impair productivity of land.

With the development of urbanization and expansion of urban land use, the need to up to date maps, has drawn the attention of the urban planners. With the advancement of the remote sensing technology and accessibility to images with high resolution powers, the classification of these land uses could be executed in different ways. In the current research, different algorithms for classifying the pixel-based were tested on the land use of the city of Urmia, using the multi spectral images of the IKONOS satellite.
