En Côte d'Ivoire la cuestión de la tierra es crucial para el desarrollo agrícola, la paz social y la legitimidad de las autoridades políticas. De 1960 a 1980, el país experimentó un fuerte crecimiento económico debido al vigor del sector agrícola, especialmente de los cultivos comerciales para la exportación. Alentados por la política del presidente Félix Houphouët-Boigny (en el poder de 1960 a 1993), varios emigrantes, tanto marfileños como extranjeros, se instalaron en el sur del país para practicar la agricultura. El "milagro marfileño" se agotó en los años 80. Entre 1999 y 2011, Côte d'Ivoire atravesó una serie de crisis políticas y de violencia étnica relacionadas con el acceso a la tierra.

Casi el 64% de la tierra se dedica a la agricultura y la ganadería extensiva, en un contexto en el que el 68% de la población activa trabaja en el sector agrícola.
