Geographies of transition: The political and geographical factors of agrarian change in Tajikistan

Reports & Research
november, 2014
Tajikistan

After more than two decades of agrarian change in Tajikistan, farming structures seem to crystallise. The first signs towards farm individualisation were observed only around 2000, which were the result of significant pressure from outside, when the post-conflict state was highly susceptible to pressure from multilateral institutions. Over time, striking differences in agrarian structures have emerged nation-wide; from highly fragmented, autonomous farms, to elite-controlled large-scale cotton farming.

2013 Agricultural Census Whole Kingdom

Reports & Research
november, 2014
Thailand

The National Statistical Office has conducted the Agricultural Census every 10 years in accordance with the recommendation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and this census round was the sixth of its series. Adaptation Actions in Africa: Evidence that Gender Matters

Reports & Research
november, 2014
Kenya
Uganda
Senegal
Africa
Eastern Africa
Western Africa

This paper presents the initial data analyses of the CCAFS gender survey implemented in four sites in Africa. Using descriptive statistics we show gender differences in terms of perceptions of climate change, awareness and adoption of climate smart agricultural (CSA) practices, and types and sources of agro-climatic information in the four sites. We find that both men and women are experiencing changes in long-run weather patterns and that they are changing their behaviours in response; albeit relatively minor shifts in existing agricultural practices.

Marginal Lands or Marginal People? Analysing Key Processes Determining the Outcomes of LargeScale Land Acquisitions in Lao PDR and Cambodia

Reports & Research
november, 2014
Myanmar
South-Eastern Asia

This chapter aims to overcome the gap existing between case study research, which typically provides qualitative and process based insights, and national or global inventories that typically offer spatially explicit and quantitative analysis of broader patterns, and thus to present adequate evidence for policymaking regarding largescale land acquisitions. Therefore, the chapter links spatial patterns of land acquisitions to underlying implementation processes of land allocation.

What is inclusive agricultural growth? Agricultural investment, productivity and land rights in the context of large-scale investments

Reports & Research
november, 2014
Africa

Reflections following the passing of the African Union’s Guiding Principles on Large-Scale Land-Based Investment, the culmination of policy processes over the past decade. Rising food prices reflect the systematic neglect of agriculture over a long period. We need indicators and monitoring, cannot rely on technology to resolve political problems, need a system-wide approach and to create opportunities for young people to build livelihoods in farming and throughout the agro-food system.

1. Background and Introduction

The Global Environment Facility in MENA

november, 2014

Environmental stress is a serious
concern in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Recent years have witnessed important changes that are
pushing the boundaries of the region's environmental
legacy. The current trends are declining water resources per
capita, shrinking arable land, deteriorating vulnerable
coastal zones and marine resources, rising energy use, and
mounting pollution, particularly in urban areas. This

The potential and uptake of remote sensing in insurance: A review

Journal Articles & Books
november, 2014

Global insurance markets are vast and diverse, and may offer many opportunities for remote sensing. To date, however, few operational applications of remote sensing for insurance exist. Papers claiming potential application of remote sensing typically stress the technical possibilities, without considering its contribution to customer value for the insured or to the profitability of the insurance industry. Based on a systematic search of available literature, this review investigates the potential and actual support of remote sensing to the insurance industry.

Economic Valuation of Climate Change Induced Biodiversity Impacts on Agriculture : Results from a Macroeconomic Application to the Mediterranean Basin

november, 2014

It is clear that climate change involves changes in temperature and precipitation and, therefore, directly affects land productivity. However, this is not the only channel for climatic change to affect agro-systems. Biodiversity is also subject to climatic change. The present paper illustrates a unique attempt to economically assess the potential effects of climate change induced impacts of biodiversity on the agricultural sector in terms of changes in land productivity, changes in agricultural output and, ultimately, changes in national GDPs.

Agricultural Productivity, Hired Labor, Wages and Poverty : Evidence from Bangladesh

november, 2014

This paper provides evidence on the
effects of agricultural productivity on wage rates, labor
supply to market oriented activities, and labor allocation
between own farming and wage labor in agriculture. To guide
the empirical work, this paper develops a general
equilibrium model that underscores the role of reallocation
of family labor engaged in the production of non-marketed
services at home (`home production'). The model
