In the face of violent dispossession and incorporation into an exploitative labor regime, indigenous peasant families in northern Guatemala are struggling to access land and defend their resources as the basis of their collective identity as Q'eqchi' peoples or R'al Ch'och ("sons and daughters of the earth"). This brief is the first in the Land & Sovereignty in the Americas series, co-published by Food First and the Transnational Institute.

European Coordination Via Campesina and Hands Off the Land Network

The Second National Conference of Farmer Women was held from 3-5 March, 2013 at Thimura,Chitwan with the participation of 162 women from 48 districts of Nepal. The conference wasorganized with focused discussion on 'Women's Land Ownership and Identity’. The conferencewell speculated the women's issues by announcing the action point. The conference wassuccessful in raising the voice of land-poor and women farmer in the domain of ensuringequitable land rights.

Our report shows that almost 60% of Tete province, site of large coal reserves, has been allocated for approved or proposed mining licenses. The report examines how serious shortcomings in government policy and mining companies’ (Vale, Riversdale, Rio Tinto) implementation uprooted largely self-sufficient farming communities and resettled them to arid land far from rivers and markets.

Note7: This note indicates that Ministry of Jihad-e-Agriculture shall issue permits for any exploitation of natural dense forests and rangelands. Priority, on the basis of technical guidelines, shall be granted to those individuals in possession of livestock grazing permits and those using Forests and Rangelands in each region. The National Programme on Forests 2004-2007 (PNF) aims to promote the balanced and sustainable use and conservation of Brazilian forests. This will be done through the articulation of public policies related to issues such as: land tenure, credit and financing, environmental legislation, research and technology, training and capacity building, etc. This interministerial programme provides incentive instruments to good use of natural resources and will broaden experiences that prove to be perfectly possible and necessary to grow with respect to the natural balance.
