Rehabilitating degraded rangelands using enclosures offers various benefits to agro-pastoral households. However, enclosure benefits cannot be generalized as there are variations across dryland ecosystems and societies. This study assessed the qualitative and quantitative benefits derived from rehabilitating degraded rangelands using private enclosures in Chepareria, West Pokot County, Kenya.

This essay explores the changing landscape of food sovereignty politics in the shadow of the so-called ‘land grab’. While the food sovereignty movement emerged within a global agrarian crisis conjuncture triggered by northern dumping of foodstuffs, institutionalized in WTO trade rules, the twenty-first-century food, energy and financial crises intensify this crisis for the world’s rural poor (inflating prices of staple foods and agri-inputs) deepening the process of dispossession.

To date, REDD+ projects in Laos have made relatively conservative choices on driver engagement, focusing on smallholder-related drivers like shifting cultivation and small-scale agricultural expansion, to the exclusion of drivers like agro-industrial concessions, mining concessions and energy and transportation infrastructure. While these choices have been based on calculated decisions made in the context of project areas, they have created a pair of challenges that REDD+ practitioners must currently confront. The first is lost opportunity.

Ce document constitue les actes du Colloque de restitution du programme de recherche APPI « Une action publique éclatée ? » organisé en décembre 2014. L’objectif du projet, mené dans le cadre de l’ANR les Suds II, est de comprendre comment, dans des pays africains dépendants de l’aide, se construit et se met en oeuvre l’action publique. Il a mobilisé les concepts et méthodes issus de plusieurs courants d’analyse tels que les sciences politiques, la socio-anthropologie du développement et l’économie institutionnelle, avec un souci d’empirisme.

This paper aims to provide keys that will help us understand contemporary land dynamics in these four countries. In order to do so it highlights their similarities and differences, both in the long history that shaped today’s local land situations and in more recent reforms implemented in the context of greater economic openness.
The first part of the paper sets the cultural and historical context, with an overview of the diverse ways that the political authorities and different groups within the region have related to land.

Climate risk represents an increasing threat to poor and vulnerable farmers in drought-proneareas of Africa. This study assesses the maize and fertilizer adoption responses of food insecure farmers in Malawi, where Drought Tolerant (DT) maize was recently introduced.

Doel van dit project is om aan de hand van twee pilots te bepalen wat de mogelijke economische en ecologische meerwaarde is van natuurinclusieve oplossingen voor waterveiligheidsopgaven uit het Deltaprogramma. Daarnaast is het doel om te toetsen of en hoe die meerwaarde een rol speelt in de praktijk van het keuzeproces. Voor de pilot in het Rivierengebied is gekozen voor nadere uitwerking van ecosysteemdiensten en natuurwaarden bij enkele alternatieven voor een hoogwatergeul langs de Waal bij Varik – Heesselt.

Context: Climate change can directly affect habitats within ecological networks, but may also have indirect effects on network quality by inducing land use change. The relative impact of indirect effects of climate change on the quality of ecological networks currently remains largely unknown. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the relative impact of direct and indirect effects of climate change on a network of breeding habitat of four meadow bird species (Black-tailed godwit, Common redshank, Eurasian oystercatcher and Northern lapwing) in the Netherlands.

De duurzaamheid van agroproductie in Nederland staat onder toenemende belangstelling. Duurzaamheid wordt niet alleen meer gezien als een ecologisch en sociaal-economisch aspect van agroproductie maar ook steeds meer als unique selling point. De duurzaamheid van de maïsteelt in Nederland staat onder druk en de noodzaak om een flinke stap te zetten naar meer duurzaamheid is groot.

De overheid wil meer natuur en recreatiemogelijkheden in het akkerbouwgebied Het Buijtenland van Rhoon (IJsselmonde). Op verzoek van een aantal agrariërs heeft de Vereniging Nederlands Cultuurlandschap een voorstel gemaakt voor inrichting en beheer van het gebied. Provincie Zuid- Holland heeft Alterra en LEI gevraagd hierop te reageren.

De overheid stelt steeds nieuwe beperkingen aan middelen en meststoffen. Volgens de nieuwe Lector Duurzaam Bodembeheer Gera van Os gaan de ontwikkelingen daarom gedwongen van chemisch naar evenwichtiger. Moderne technieken en analysemethodes kunnen daarbij van dienst zijn. „Teelt moet optimaal in duurzaamheid.”
