Temperate broad-leaved trees grow in different ecosystems in the northern and southern hemispheres, but are also found extensively in many tropical and subtropical mountain areas. A wide range of non-wood forest products derived from temperate broad-leaved trees, and their description is organized in this volume according to the part of the tree from which they are obtained (whole tree, foliage, flowers, etc.).

The current publication «State of the Forest Genetic Resources in Eritrea» is issue of country national report presented at The Sub- Regional Workshop FAO/IPGRI/ICRAF on the conservation, management, sustainable utilization and enhancement of forest genetic resources in Sahelian and North-Sudanian Africa (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, 22-24 September 1998).

The survey of tropical forests reported here was developed and implemented with the aim of providing detailed and reliable information on the process of on-going chenges in the tropical forest cover, in order to meet the needs of researchers, policy makers and the public at large.
