The world’s mangroves 1980–2005 is a thematic study undertaken within the framework of the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005. It was led by FAO in collaboration with mangrove specialists throughout the world, and was co-funded by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). It builds on the 1980 assessment, on the FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2000 (FRA 2000) and 2005 (FRA 2005), and on an extensive literature search and correspondence with mangrove and forest resources assessment specialists.

The State of the World’s Forests (SOFO) 2016 “Forests and Agriculture – Land Use Challenges and Opportunities” examines the competing demands for land for forests and agriculture; and the relationship between forest cover changes and food security. In particular, forests and food security highlight the possibility to meet food security objectives while maintaining or increasing existing forests.

The objective of the present study was to deepen understanding of outcomes and impacts contributed by the leasehold forestry (LHF) programme, particularly in terms of improving livelihoods, reducing poverty and rehabilitating degraded forests in the hills of Nepal, through improved forest management.

Taxonomy and classification of the Salicaceae are addressed in an authoritative manner, with descriptions of all important individual species, but recognizing the differences in philosophy that still exist in these topics. Natural ecosystems are described. Genetic resources of poplars and willows are covered comprehensively, including selection, tree improvement and conservation, as well as the latest developments in genomics.

Ce rapport s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet « Optimiser la production de biens et services par les écosystèmes boisés méditerranéens dans un contexte de changements globaux » (2012-2016), financé par le Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial et cofinancé par l’agence Allemande de coopération Internationale (GIZ), le Ministère de l’Agriculture, de l’Agroalimentaire et de la Forêt (MAAF) et l’Union Européenne dans cinq pays d'Afrique du Nord (Algérie, Maroc, Tunisie) et du Proche-Orient (Liban, Turquie).

Located in the Keserwan-Jbeil region of Lebanon, the Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve (N 34º 03’ 43.93”, E 35º 46’ 09.84”) is bordered by the Nahr Ibrahim river to the north and the Nahr el Dahab river to the south. The area of the reserve is approximately 6 500 ha large and the range of altitudes (350 to 1 600 m) is responsible for a wide variety of habitats. A typical Mediterranean ecosystem is located within the reserve, where evergreen sclerophylic shrubs and forests are the most common type of vegetation spread on karstic landscapes and steep slopes.

This paper presents an overview of the various approaches that developed and developing countries have used in designing national forest funds. It is based on a study of legislation in over forty countries and a review of some of the few empirical studies of forest fund performance. The overview may serve as checklist of issues and options for policymakers who are designing funds. It also may illuminate ongoing discussions about appropriate international roles in forest financing. The paper presents some of the common arguments for and against the use of dedicated funds.

The main aim of this study is to facilitat e access to comprehensive and comparable information on the current and past extent of mangroves in the 124 countries and areas where they are known to exist, highlighting information gaps and providing updated information that may serve as a tool for mangrove managers and policy- and decision-makers worldwide.

Ce second numéro de FAO-Info vous présente de façon succincte les principales activités menées par la Représentation au cours des mois mars et avril 2013. Ces activités s’articulent notamment autour de la formation des producteurs des régions du Sud, Centre et l’Est sur la thématique des « Champs Ecoles Paysans » et du personnel de la Représentation sur l’utilisation du nouvel outil de gestion Citrix et GRMS.

Mangroves, commonly found along sheltered coastlines in the tropics and subropics, fulfil important socio-economic and envioronmental functions: providing wood and non-wood forest products, protecting shores against wind, waves and water currents; conserving biological diversity; protecting coral reefs, sea-grass beds and shipping lanes against siltation; and providing habitat, spawning grounds and nutrients for a variety of fish and shellfish, including many commercial species.
