Biodiversity and local perceptions on the edge of a conservation area, Khe Tran Village, Vietnam

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2006
Vietnam

Decisions on land use in Vietnam are often only based on biophysical and economical assessments, with little consideration for the local people’s opinions or perspectives. This can lead to conflicts over natural resources management, unsustainable land use and decisions that are unfair to local people. In the landscape surrounding Khe Tran, a village in Central Vietnam lives a Pahy minority group. The driving force in this area has been different land use policies, resulting mainly from a government ‘top down’ approach, and the consequent changes in local forest status.

While Carbon (C) sequestration on farmlands may contribute to mitigate CO2 concentrations in the

atmosphere, greater agro-biodiversity may ensure longer term stability of C storage in fluctuating

environments. This study was conducted in the highlands of western Kenya, a region with high potential

for agroforestry, with the objectives of assessing current biodiversity and aboveground C stocks in

perennial vegetation growing on farmland, and estimating C sequestration potential in aboveground C

Estern Colombia, the Llanos, is constituted of broad grass formations. These big expanses of savannahs present a huge potential for extensive bovine breeding. Unfortunately, these natural pastures have a low productivity and a feeble quality, due to low fertility soils with a deficiency in phosphorus and a hgih acidity. In regard to the importance of the breeding for the region, it`s essential to know the savannahs `characteristics in order to ameliorate the exploitation which is done of them.
