Climate-smart cocoa in forest landscapes: Lessons from institutional innovations in Ghana

Dezembro, 2022
Ghana

Integrated landscape approaches have been welcomed by scientists and development practitioners as a promising way to address commodity-driven deforestation and associated land degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. They present cross-sectoral approaches to manage trade-offs between multiple land uses and environmental and socio-economic objectives through participatory multi-stakeholder planning and negotiation processes. The success of landscape approaches depends on the larger institutional systems of rules, regulations, and actor networks in which they are embedded.

Genetic evaluation of growth rate and efficiency-related traits in Dorper sheep

Dezembro, 2022
Global

The present study was carried out to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters for growth rate and efficiency-related traits in Dorper sheep. Growth records from the breeding flock of Dorper sheep collected between 2012 and 2021 at Debre Birhan Agricultural Research Center, Amhara Region, Ethiopia were used in this study.

Drivers and consequences of tenure insecurity and mechanisms for enhancing tenure security: A synthesis of CGIAR research on tenure security (2013–2020)

Dezembro, 2022
United States of America

Research since the 1990s highlights the importance of tenure rights for sustainable natural resource management, and for alleviating poverty and enhancing nutrition and food security for the 3.14 billion rural inhabitants of less-developed countries who rely on forests and agriculture for their livelihoods. Which rights or combination of rights an individual, household, or community has affects whether they have access to land and resources, as well as how those can be used and for how long. Equally important is the degree to which landholders perceive their tenure to be secure.

Building a feral future: Open questions in crop ferality

Dezembro, 2022
Global

The phenomenon of feral crops, that is, free-living populations that have established outside cultivation, is understudied. Some researchers focus on the negative consequences of domestication, whereas others assert that feral populations may serve as useful pools of genetic diversity for future crop improvement. Although research on feral crops and the process of feralization has advanced rapidly in the last two decades, generalizable insights have been limited by a lack of comparative research across crop species and other factors.

Inorganic fertilizer use and its association with rice yield gaps in sub-Saharan Africa

Dezembro, 2022
Global

Where and which countries should receive higher priority for improving inorganic fertilizer use in rice fields in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)? This study addressed this question by assessing the spatial variation in fertilizer use and its association with rice yield and yield gap in 24 SSA countries through a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed papers, theses, and grey literature published between 1995 and 2021.

CGIAR gender equality initiative

Dezembro, 2022
Global

The first edition of HER Voice, the official newsletter of the CGIAR gender equality research initiative (HER+) highlights the significant strides made by HER+. Our achievements include the development of a gendered social norms index, a pioneering framework for women-led climate-smart socio-technical innovation bundles, a comprehensive review of gendered resilience through social protection design, and the unveiling of the Women’s Empowerment in Agrifood System Governance Assessment Tool (WEAGov).

Designing for change through “reflecting and doing”: the CGIAR Community of Practice on Gender- Transformative Research Methodologies

Dezembro, 2022
Global

Gender-transformative change requires a commitment from everyone involved in agricultural research for development (AR4D) including organizations at international and national level, individual researchers and practitioners, farmers, development agencies, policy-makers and consumers, to transform the existing values, practices and priorities that (re)produce and perpetuate gender biases and inequities in agrifood systems.

Incentive Mechanisms, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Communication of the CORIGAP Project

Dezembro, 2022
Global

In this chapter, we propose a framework of market-based incentive mechanisms for the adoption and scaling of sustainable production standards throughout rice value chains and review evidence of two mechanisms that have been piloted in Vietnam: “internalizing” and “embodying.” The evidence suggests that sustainable production standards can be successfully “internalized” in rice value chains through policies (public governance) that provide an enabling environment for vertical coordination and private governance of standards (e.g., through contract farming).

Facilitating Climate Smartness in Extension Service Delivery and Impacting Farmers in Ghana

Dezembro, 2022
Ghana

The project intervention communities of The Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) in Ghana are vulnerable to climate variability and change, which continues to pose a threat to food crop production. Increasing the resilience of the communities includes building their capacity on climate smart agriculture practices (CSA), climate information services (CIS) and One-health (OH) innovations. A Training of Trainers workshop was organized and Thirty-six Master trainers (mainly extension officers) received training on CSA, CIS, and OH innovations.

Africa-Wide Conference on the Improved NextGen Approach (Ghana's Participation)

Dezembro, 2022
Ghana

The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), as part of Columbia Climate School at Columbia University organized an intensive three-week conference on subseasonal and seasonal forecasting using the updated NextGen (PyCPT2.5.5) approach at its Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory campus in Palisades, New York with staff from ICPAC and AGRHYMET, as well as the national meteorological services of six AICCRA countries and Lesotho.
