This project focuses on the governance structures and mechanisms needed to enable, support and maintain successful WSI optimization strategies.The latter research relates not only to individual reservoirs, but also to cascades, including transboundary cascades. It draws on other Mekong BDC projects as well as institutional analysis of current water governance for different uses.

Operational analysis of the cascaded Wadecha-Belbela reservoir system (Ada’a Liben Woreda, in Oromia Region)

Wadecha-Belbela reservoir system is located in Oromia Region, East Shoa zone, Adaa Liben woreda serving as a water source of 1600ha irrigation projects. The irrigation system under the reservoir system is increasing progressively during the past decades. The expansion of irrigation development without the knowledge of the water source will have the outcome of agricultural yield reduction and water stress. Inadequate knowledge on operation of the reservoir has been leading to inefficient usage of stored water.

At this point – just under half way (two years and six months) in the implementation of the first CPWF phase (and three years and eight months since inception began) governance and management processes are running smoothly, it is in reasonable financial health and technical processes – such as issuing new calls and obtaining reviews by our Expert Panel on Scientific Quality – are familiar, although they must be adjusted to each specific instance.

Quantity and Qualities: The Development and Extent of Transboundary Water Law in Africa

This article documents and analyzes the largest collection of transboundary water agreements related to Africa. Collection contents are categorized to provide insights into the evolution and geography of transboundary water law in Africa, and – when possible - to situate that law within a global context. The findings reveal that both historic and geographic factors have influenced African agreements. Historically, there is a trend toward increasing robustness generally consistent with global trends.

The aim of this paper is to contribute to a more holistic understanding of farmers’ decision making process for innovations in soil conservation. In this study, farmers’ decision making has been explored in the context of a mountainous olive growing area in northwest Syria, where evidences of land degradation are widespread.
