Crop growth and soil water balance modeling to explore water management options

Reports & Research
Dezembro, 2002

The study was on the performance of the decision support system for agrotechnology transfer (DSSAT) and the soil water atmosphere plant (SWAP) under an acid sulphate soil. The comparison of these models was done as a prerequisite to the selection of an appropriate model, which is capable of simulating water management scenarios, water balance and crop growth, to be coupled with an adaptive optimization algorithm that can be used to explore water management options

Evolution, present status and issues concerning small tank systems in Sri Lanka [Small tanks in Sri Lanka: evolution, present status and issues]

The core of this study involved an examination and analysis of certain key features of the traditional small tank cascade systems: a) the location and design of the systems in the past b) the hydro-system which considers the overall hydrological balance and groundwater conditions c) maintenance and tank use d) tank management and integration with local farming systems

Incorporating a water-logging routine into CERES-Maize, and some preliminary evaluations

Journal Articles & Books
Dezembro, 2002

The inability of CERES-Maize v3.0 to simulate a fluctuating water table has been identified as a major constraint in using this particular model in South Africa and in Kenya. Information regarding fluctuating water tables under specific conditions, and their influence on maize production, has been presented in South African literature. The objective of this study was to construct a simple water-logging subroutine based on these mechanisms, using the existing input data structure of CERES-Maize.

Irrigation sector in Sri Lanka: recent investment trends and the development path ahead

Increasing the area under irrigation and the widespread adoption of seed-fertilizer technology were the major factors that contributed to enhanced rice production in Sri Lanka, enabling the country to achieve self-sufficiency in rice. In recent years, there has been a shift in emphasis from expanding the irrigated land base to enhancing the productivity of irrigated land through diversification of agriculture and improvement of rice production, with better water management in irrigation schemes.
