Towards a Replicable Innovative Tool for Adaptive Climate Monitoring and Weather Forecasting Using Traditional Indigenous and Local Indicators to Strengthen AgroWeather Resilience at Scale

Dezembro, 2022
Global

This paper presents lessons of a replicable innovative decision support tool to systematize traditional indigenous
knowledge base for local climate monitoring and weather forecasting. The methodological tool, herein called the
traditional indigenous and local knowledge tool (TILKIT), was conceptualized under two training-of-trainers
initiatives on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) in East Africa from March 2016 to December 2021. The aim was to

Technical assistance to strengthen national agricultural research organizations’ capacity to use digital sequence information. A submission from CGIAR

Dezembro, 2022
Global

CGIAR submitted this report in response to an open request from the Plant Treaty Secretary, for submissions regarding, a) contracting parties’ and stakeholders’ capacity building needs for accessing and using digital sequence information (DSI)/genomic sequence data (GSD) and b) ‘technical assistance’ and ‘actions taken’ by stakeholders (including CGIAR) ‘to reduce the existing gap on capacity regarding DSI/GSD’.

Maize productivity and household welfare impacts of mobile money usage in Tanzania

Dezembro, 2022
Global

This study examined the determinants and impacts of mobile money (MM) usage on maize productivity and poverty likelihood (i.e., the probability of a household falling below the international poverty line at USD 1.9 per capita per day) in the Mbeya Region, Tanzania. The analysis was conducted using the endogenous switching regression (ESR) model on data from a random sample of 1310 households selected from seven districts in the region.

Enhancing sustainable agri-food systems using multi-nutrient fertilizers in Kenyan smallholder farming systems

Dezembro, 2022
Global

Persistent food insecurity in the global south has triggered calls for sustainable development worldwide. Moreover, more than a quarter of the world's population suffers from micronutrient deficiencies or hidden hunger. The population bulge, declining soil fertility and inadequate/inappropriate use of farm inputs in Sub-Saharan Africa place it in a precarious position. Multi-nutrient fertilizer blends have been mooted as a key innovation in closing yield gaps and boosting food and nutrition security.

Diversities In Motion: Multifunctionality of Maize Production in Different Family Farming Systems in South and Central Mexico

Dezembro, 2022
Iceland

Background: Maize agricultural policy in Mexico has focused on a monofunctional vision of maize as a basic
commercial product, through a bimodal vision of production systems (commercial and subsistence). However, the
evidence suggests that the challenge of thinking about the multifunctionality of this crop must be faced due to the
complexity of its relationship within different strata of society, to more adequately reflect the diversity of systems
based on maize, as well as their flexibility to respond to new challenges and opportunities, and to have better

Upscaling groundnut seed production and delivery through long-term public–private and development organization partnerships : Experiences from Tanzania

Dezembro, 2022
Global

Making quality seed of improved legume varieties sustainably available and accessible to farmers in a timely manner and at affordable price is a major challenge in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Overcoming this challenge requires collective and long-term action through public–private and development organization partnerships (PPDOPs). The PPDOP model was tested by key seed system actors under the Tropical Legumes (TL) and Accelerated Varietal Improvement and Seed Delivery of Legumes and Cereals in Africa (AVISA) projects from 2008 to 2021.

Unsupervised segmentation and clustering time series approach to Southern Africa rainfall regime changes

Dezembro, 2022
Global

Analysis of hydro-climatological time series and spatiotemporal dynamics of meteorological variables has become critical in the context of climate change, especially in Southern African countries where rain-fed agriculture is predominant. In this work, we compared modern unsupervised time series and segmentation approaches and commonly used time series models to analyse rainfall regime changes in the coastal, sub-humid and semi-arid regions of Southern Africa.

Enset landrace diversity in major enset growing regions of Southern Ethiopia

Dezembro, 2022
Global

Enset [Ensete ventricosum (Welw.) Cheesman] is an important food security crop of the Southern Ethiopian highlands. The cultivation of enset is characterised by a wide variety of landraces, suitable to varying agro-ecological conditions and with multiple uses by households. The objective of this paper is to present enset landrace diversity, characteristics and uses in Ethiopia.

Streamlining Climate Education to Tackle Climate Crisis: Call For Action to Empower Ethiopia’s Next Generation with Climate Knowledge and Build Resilience

Dezembro, 2022
Global

Climate change has become a reality that requires mitigation and adaptation of climate change by devising appropriate measures and participatory approaches. Ethiopia is committed to setting policy frameworks and implementation strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change and produce a climate change-resilient society. It is well understood that education and climate change have a reciprocal relationship, and education has a strong power for climate change adaptation and mitigation endeavours.

Governing agricultural data: Challenges and recommendations

Dezembro, 2022
Global

The biomedical domain has shown that in silico analyses over vast data pools enhances the speed and scale of scientific innovation. This can hold true in agricultural research and guide similar multi-stakeholder action in service of global food security as well (Streich et al. Curr Opin Biotechnol 61:217–225. Retrieved from https://doi.org/10.1016/j.copbio.2020.01.010, 2020).
