The Relation between Large-Scale Land Acquisitions and Rural Households: Evidence from Ethiopia and Tanzania

markdownabstractThe aim of the thesis is to understand the impact of large-scale foreign land acquisitions on rural households. The rapid expansion of large-scale land acquisition (LSLA) by foreign investors in developing countries over the past 10 years has precipitated a heated debate over the impacts on rural households in the recipient regions. LSLA brings often much-needed investment to agriculture in developing countries, potentially raising productivity, and creating rental and labour opportunities from which rural households can benefit.

Women's empowerment is considered a ‘prerequisite’ to achieving global food security. Gender systems, however, are diverse and complex. The nature and extent of gender inequity and the conditions necessary to empower women vary across countries, communities and regions. The study of different gender systems is thus fundamental to capture cross-cultural variations in gender specific needs and constraints to effectively address gender gaps.

Global Land Outlook

Global

Land is an essential building block of civilization yet its contribution to our quality of life is perceived and valued in starkly different and often incompatible ways. Conflicts about land use are intensifying in many countries. The world has reached a point where we must reconcile these differences and rethink the way in which we use and manage the land.

This report combines the conclusions of several scientific studies and the opinions of numerous researchers and specialized organizations that have focused these past few years on the link between climate and security. It highlights the essential contributions of a collective group of experts in order to concentrate on this issue and encourage institutions such as foreign and defense ministries to adopt new approaches.

Using parallel random forest classifier in predicting land suitability for crop production

In this paper, we present an optimized Machine Learning (ML) algorithm for predicting land suitability for crop (sorghum) production, given soil properties information. We set-up experiments using Parallel Random Forest (PRF), Linear Regression (LR), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), KNN, Gaussian Naïve Bayesian (GNB) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Experiments were evaluated using 10 cross fold validation. We observed that, parallel random forest had a better accuracy of 0.96 and time of execution of 1.7 sec. Agriculture is the main stream of food security.

Better soil health can increase agricultural productivity. Restoration activities can build on-farm resilience and contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Land and soil health surveys can improve crop modeling predictions under various climate scenarios and guide more targeted interventions.

Currently, most assessments of land and soil health do not consider the social, ecological, and biophysical constraints, or acknowledge the variations in the landscape.

Scenarios of Vegetable Demand vs. Production in Brazil: The Links between Nutritional Security and Small Farming

Brasil

Dietary guidelines urge Brazilians to increase their consumption of raw vegetables. Yet key issues must be tackled by the government and civil society, not only to foster consumers’ appetite for healthier food, but more importantly to diminish the gaps between local demand and production, determined by food and land accessibility. We examine whether vegetable production in Brazil meets the demand to provide Brazilians the daily amount of fresh food recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
