Dezembro, 2019
Ethiopia

This study intended to determine factors influencing marketable supply of avocado fruit at Lemo woreda in Hadiya zone. The avocado production suffers from many limitations such as, lack of well-organized market system, inadequate skill of post-harvest handling and lack of market information system in the study area. Youth in livestock and the transformative power of rural education: the case of Heirs of Tradition, 2012–2020

Dezembro, 2019
Global

“How can we continue with our studies?” was one of the first questions asked to the teachers by Luisa, a student attending the Heirs of Tradition livestock production program, implemented by Alquería and the National Training Service (SENA, its Spanish acronym) in Colombia, in view of the relentless spread of the COVID- 19 pandemic in Colombia.1 At first sight, the predictable complications brought along by mandatory confinement to halt the spread of the pandemic could be overcome virtually, the way many students from urban schools and universities are still doing.

Strategies to achieve the GHG Mitigation Goals of the livestock sector in Latin America

Dezembro, 2019
Colombia

Livestock production is a fundamental source of income and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Latin American countries. 20 percent of the region's emissions come from agriculture, 70 percent of which comes from livestock. There are several management and technology options with enteric methane mitigation potential that have been evaluated and their scale is expected to contribute to achieving the GHG emission reduction targets under the Paris Agreement.

Small livestock: climate-smart, environmentally sound, economically empowering, gender-fair and transformative agricultural enterprises in Cambodia

Dezembro, 2019
Cambodia

The potential contribution of rural women to climate mitigation by being part of the economic cycle is not sufficiently exploited. Economic empowerment through climate adaptation can foster economic growth, promote socio-economic development, reduce poverty, keep environmental problems in check, and increase potential for adaptation which benefits both men and women (Research Gate). The conservation of small livestock agrobiodiversity while creating value addition economic empowerment has considerable potential for enrichening local food system while conserving animal genetic resources.

On-farm agrobiodiversity measurement and conservation

Global

Total agrobiodiversity of any area is necessary to plan the implementation of agricultural and environmental projects and activities. Diversity is most for advancing agriculture development, however, modern agriculture has accelerated the replacement of old age crop diversity. Agrobiodiversity index and measures are commonly used and estimated for crop and animal species, landraces and sites. These are useful for locating sites, crops and custodians of agrobiodiversity.

A methodology for mapping current and future heat stress risk in pigs

Dezembro, 2019
Global

Heat stress is a global issue constraining pig productivity, and it is likely to intensify under future climate change. Technological advances in earth observation have made tools available that enable identification and mapping livestock species that are at risk of exposure to heat stress due to climate change. Here, we present a methodology to map the current and likely future heat stress risk in pigs using R software by combining the effects of temperature and relative humidity. We applied the method to growing-finishing pigs in Uganda.

Integrated health interventions for improved livelihoods: a case study in Ethiopia

Ethiopia

Smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face multifaceted and co-existing risks, such as human and animal diseases and pests. Even though smallholder farmers often experience these challenges simultaneously, interventions to address these challenges are often implemented in a piecemeal fashion. However, managing agricultural production constraints without alleviating human and livestock health burdens might not generate significant and sustained benefits to achieve the desired development outcome (e.g., reducing hunger, malnutrition, and poverty).
