This country profile describes the state of the water resources and water use, as well as the state of agricultural water management in Suriname. The aim of this report is to describe the particularities of the country and the problems met in the development of the water resources, and irrigation in particular.

While the potential contribution of a nationally implemented program for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) to developing countries’ budgets remains as yet obscure, two general concerns are that REDD+ will i) incentivize land grabbing and ii) remain financially uncompetitive against current commercial forest uses.

This Instrument, made by the Minister of State under section 39 of the Protected Areas Act declares Kanashen Village to be an Amerindian Protected Area. Kanashen Village is communal village lands held by the Village Council on behalf of the Wai Wai Amerindian people of that Village. The Village Council is the Sole Management Authority for the Amerindian Protected Area.
International bi-lateral agreements to support the conservation of rainforests to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are growing in prevalence. In 2009, the governments of Guyana and Norway established Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). We examine the extent to which the participation and inclusion of Guyana’s indigenous population within the LCDS is being achieved.
These Measures are enacted for the purposes of strengthening the supervision and administration of the environmental protection of the contaminated land parcel and preventing and controlling the environmental risks in the contaminated land parcel.
