The FAO Legal Office provides in-house counsel in accordance with the Basic Texts of the Organization, gives legal advisory services to FAO members, assists in the formulation of treaties on food and agriculture, for which the Director-General acts as Depositary, publishes legal studies and maintains a database (FAOLEX) of national legislation and international agreements concerning food and agriculture (including fisheries, forestry and water).

The aim of granting incentives for investment is to protect agricultural land, to prevent erosion and pollution of the soil, and to enhance biodiversity and natural beauty. The Act regulates the alienation of land or other real property through voluntary sale, exchange or donation. Loi nº 83-87 relative à la protection des terres agricoles.
Cette loi établit le régime relatif à la protection des terres agricoles, c'est à dire celles classées comme telles dans les plans d'aménagement et celles présentant des potentialités physiques et affectées à une production agricole forestière ou pastorale. Ces terres sont réparties en trois zones, à savoir: zone d'interdiction, zone de sauvegarde et zones soumises à autorisation.
Loi nº 96-050 portant principes de constitution et de gestion du domaine des collectivités territoriales.
Cette loi porte les principes de constitution et de gestion du domaine des collectivités territoriales. La loi est formée par 40 articles répartis en 2 titres, à savoir: Constitution du domaine, portant la définition et la description des domaines publics et privés des collectivités (I); Gestion du domaine, portant les dispositions relatives à la gestion des domaines agricole, forestier, pastoral, piscicole, faunique, de l'habitat et minier, sur la base d'un schéma d'aménagement (II).
