The FAO Legal Office provides in-house counsel in accordance with the Basic Texts of the Organization, gives legal advisory services to FAO members, assists in the formulation of treaties on food and agriculture, for which the Director-General acts as Depositary, publishes legal studies and maintains a database (FAOLEX) of national legislation and international agreements concerning food and agriculture (including fisheries, forestry and water).

Indian Lands Open Dump Cleanup Act of 1994 (P.L. 103-399).

"Indian lands" means lands within the limits of Indian reservations, dependant Indian communities, and Indian allotments (sect. 3). The Act applies also to Alaska Native Lands. The Director of Indian Health Service shall conduct an inventory of open dumps. The Director shall also be responsible for a 10-year development plan and annual reports to Congress on Indian solid waste deficiencies, progress made in addressing such deficiencies and funding (sect. 4). An inventory shall also take place on request of an Indian tribal government or Alaska Native Entity (sect. 5).

Auburn Indian Restoration Act (P.L. 103-434).

An Act for the recognition of the United Auburn Indian Community in California, for the restoration of rights of this tribe, and for the economic development of the tribe. Section 204 provides for the transfer of lands for the benefit of the tribe to be held in trust by the Secretary of the Interior. Nothing in this Act shall expand, reduce, or affect in any manner any hunting, fishing, trapping, gathering, or water right of the tribe or its members (sect. 202).

National Contaminated Sediment Assessment and Management Act (P.L. 102-580 - Title V).

There is established a National Contaminated Sediment Task Force. The task force shall review reports on aquatic sediment quality and make recommendations to prevent aquatic sediment contamination and to control sources of such contamination (sect. 502). The Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency shall conduct a comprehensive national survey of data regarding aquatic sediment quality in the United States (sect. 503). Parts of the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act of 1972 are amended.

Colombia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act (P.L. 99-663).

A National Scenic Area is established and certain areas of the Area are designated as special management areas under section 4. A Columbia River Gorge Commission, which is a regional agency, shall be established by way of an interstate agreement between the States of Oregon and Washington. The Commission shall prepare a scenic area management plan under section 6. The Commission shall also develop land use designations within 2 years of its establishment. Sections 7 and 8 provide for the administration of the Scenic Area and the special management areas. (18 sections)

Plant protection and soil conservation stations are part of the national administration. They are established in each county and in the capital and are supervised by the Minister of Agriculture through a specialized division of the Ministry. They carry out all the duties regarding plant protection, plant health and soil conservation specified in special provisions. As part public, part private structures they can establish enterprises.
