África Oriental

A study to determine carbon sequestration potentials and soil attributes was conducted in Borana rangelands of southern Ethiopia under communally grazed areas, grazing enclosures (rangelands enclosed for 20 years for dry season grazing) and rangelands managed by prescribed fire for more than five years after fire application. Soil attributes were collected from three soil depths (0–10 cm, 10–20 cm and 20–30 cm) and both aboveground and belowground carbon were estimated in all treatments.

Small-ruminant production contributes significantly to the national and household economy in many countries. Small-ruminants are a key component of the livelihood systems in rural Ethiopia which substantially contribute to income, food, skin and wool, manure, serve as part of the crop failure risk-coping portfolio of enterprises, for asset wealth security as a form of saving money and social and cultural functions. This study analyzes hedonic price analysis of indigenous sheep and goats traits in two districts (Atsbi-Wemberta and Adwa) of eastern and central Tigray, northern Ethiopia.

Estimation of groundwater recharge and potentials under changing climate in Werii Watershed, Tekeze River Basin

África Oriental

This study was conducted in Werii watershed (1797 km2) of Tekeze river basin, through integrative use of hydrological and climate models with the objective of estimating the impact of climate change on groundwater recharge and groundwater potentials. Statistical downscaling model (SDSM) was used to downscale precipitation and temperature outputs from REMO (REgional climate MOdel) which in turn was used as input to the WetSpa model to simulate future water balance changes based on A1B and B1 SRES emission scenarios.

The objectives of this study were to describe the production environment and production systems, characterize (phenotypic) and evaluate on-farm performances of Abergelle and Central Highland goat breeds. A total of 256 farmers in Ziquala (68), Tanqua Abergelle (70) and Lay- Armachiho (118) districts were interviewed for the household survey.
