This document surveys the poor, performance and gloomy prospects for agriculture in Africa, which can be improved only if every country undertakes heavy investment to increase food production, storage, processing and distribution and 1mprove the over-all structure, institutions, research and training in the field of food and agriculture.

This paper focuses on the reviews of fertilizer situation and recent trend in the African region in relation to those in the worlds the conclusion reached is that in certain area of the region high priority should be according to the development of the basis of indigenous raw materials and energy resource wich are available in abundances. An attempt has been made to estimate rough orders of magnitude of the investment implications based on import substitution on the one hand and combinations of import substitution and increase exports on the others

Estimates and projections of the agricultural population and the economically active population (or labour force) in agriculture are important for agricultural planning since, apart from indicating the size of the population depending for their living on, and engaged in agriculture, they have direct implications on agricultural employment policies. They are also needed for the determination of such important development indicators as per Capita agricultural income, labour productivity in agriculture and the proportion of population or labour force in agriculture.
