This is the report relating to the facts finding mission conducted by HAKIARDHI and LHRC as an intervention in response to an outcry from the villagers at Namwawala village in Kilombero district, Morogoro region, owing to the alleged plan of the government to take possession of the village land for investment purposes.

Over the Last three months, acts of unconceivable evil were perpetrated through an eviction operation against indigenous pastoralists in Loliondo. Loliondo is one of the three Divisions of the Ngorongoro District situated in the Arusha Region in Northern Tanzania. The Ngorongoro District Covers an area of about 14037 square Kilometres. Stretching across some 8,300 sq km, is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, established in 1959 and governed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, and the rest is the Loliondo Game Control Area consisting of the Sale and Loliondo Divisions.

Foreign direct investments in land in developing countries

The world food crisis has spurred foreign direct investments (FDI) into arable land in developing countries. While significant financial inflows into agricultural sectors could be beneficial on a global scale, it could negatively affect local livelihoods. This article provides an overview of the different types of FDI in land. In addition, examples of investment flows are illustrated in an overview and a sustainable impact matrix outlines the occurring effects. Finally, requirements of avoiding negative effects are presented, to achieve a Pareto-efficient win-win situation.

While early attempts at land titling in Africa were often unsuccessful, the need to secure land rights has kindled renewed interest, in view of increased demand for land, a range of individual and communal rights available under new laws, and reduced costs from combining information technology with participatory methods. We used a difference-in-difference approach to assess the effects of a low-cost land registration program in Ethiopia, which covered some 20 million plots over five years, on investment.

This research is intended to help contribute to this articulation process by identifying and consolidating small farmers' trade agenda in five countries, namely Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. These countries represent a good mix of both net agricultural exporters and importers, providing the paper with a balanced perspective of looking at trade and its impact on small farmers. The agenda of small farmers in these countries formed the bases for the formulation of their trade agenda in ASEAN. The research is divided into three parts.

O presente texto trata de aspectos da história agrária do antigo município de Soledade, localizado no norte do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Interessa-nos conhecer faces da realidade local a partir da aplicação da Lei de Terras de 1850 e destacar algumas de suas conseqüências econômicas e sociais. Nessa região, a partir da segunda metade do século 19, o crescimento populacional, a chegada dos imigrantes europeus e a crescente privatização do solo contribuíram forte-mente para o aumento do preço das terras.

En este trabajo nos proponemos analizar la formación del mercado de tierras durante la expansión de la frontera de la provincia de Buenos Aires entre 1860 y 1890, a partir de un enfoque local comparado, enfocando la investigación en dos partidos: Chascomús y Junín. Postulamos que la constitución del mercado de tierras en la campaña bonaerense fue un proceso gradual, que se inició apenas comenzaron a poblarse las tierras defendidas por los fuertes de la frontera interior y se establecían ciertas garantías de seguridad para la propiedad privada.

Este trabajo se propone caracterizar la formación y el funcionamiento de un mercado de tierras en dos partidos del 'nuevo sur' bonaerense, en el transcurso del siglo XIX. El proceso de apropiación de estas tierras implicó la negociación de las mismas en diferentes instancias y a través de diversas modalidades, lo cual fue configurando un mercado de la tierra, aún antes de la consolidación de la propiedad plena sobre el suelo.
