RNAseq of diverse spring wheat cultivars released during last 110 years

декабря, 2022
Global

Here, we performed RNA-seq based expression analysis of root and leaf tissues of a set of 24 historical spring wheat cultivars representing 110 years of temporal genetic variations. This huge 130 tissues RNAseq dataset was initially used to study expression pattern of 97 genes regulating root growth and development in wheat. Root system architecture (RSA) is an important target for breeding stress-resilient and high-yielding wheat cultivars under climatic fluctuations.

Innovation packages and scaling readiness workshop for smallholder famers mechanization starter pack, Zimbabwe: An activity report

декабря, 2022
Zimbabwe

The smallholder mechanization starter pack is an innovation pioneered and developed by CIMMYT’s mechanization team in Zimbabwe. This tool was born out of necessity to alleviate farm power shortage faced by smallholder farmers and farming communities, offering a low-cost mechanization option centered on two-wheel tractor and small engine driven machinery pack. The pack is meticulously tailored to enhance land and labour productivity, improve timeliness of agricultural operations, reduce production cost, and eliminate human drudgery.

Feasibility of implementing a Risk-Contingent Credit (RCC) program in Zambia: Stakeholder engagement

декабря, 2022
Zambia

Changes in frequency and intensity of climate and weather events are a key challenge to agricultural production among farmers in Zambia. Climate variability reduces farm productivity, which in turn contributes to household food insecurity, income variability, and reduced overall economic growth. Using improved technologies such as mechanization, improved seed varieties, irrigation, and fertilizer can improve climate resilience and farm production among smallholder farmers.

Situation report on Nepal’s agrifood systems : June 2023

декабря, 2022
Nepal

Data from May indicates a persistent trend of modest price increases in Nepal. Year-on-year inflation for food and beverage prices was recorded at 5.5 percent, which, though lower compared to 6.9 percent in the previous month and significantly less than in April and May 2022, still denotes an escalation in food prices from an already elevated base. While the high inflation rate impacts all consumers, it is likely to disproportionately strain the finances of the poor, potentially jeopardizing food security. Moreover, the inflation rates for non-food items and services surged to 8.9 percent.

Energy transition minerals and their intersection with land-connected peoples

Global

Rapidly transitioning the global energy system to renewables is considered necessary to combat climate change. Current estimates suggest that at least 30 energy transition minerals and metals (ETMs) form the material base for the energy transition. The inventory of ETMs indicates a high level of intersectionality with territories less impacted by the historic forces of industrialization.

This report is based on 10 research projects carried out in 18 sites in seven countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Viet Nam. The studies formed the basis of ten informational briefs from the research sites published together with the report (available here: https://www.recoftc.org/publications/0000432). Each study documented the legal frameworks and customary practices that affect indigenous women’s rights to access and manage forest resources and create restrictions on those rights.

Formalizing tenure of Indigenous lands improved forest outcomes in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil

Brazil

Across the globe, the legal land rights and tenure of many Indigenous peoples are yet to be recognized. A growing body of research demonstrates that tenure of Indigenous lands improves livelihoods and protects forests in addition to inherently recognizing human rights. However, the effect of tenure on environmental outcomes has scarcely been tested in regions with high development pressure, such as those with persisting forest–agriculture conflicts.
