Land degradation is a major problem in the semi-arid environments of Sub-Saharan Africa. While there is an important body of research on environmental discourses and policy in Southeast Asia, the situation in the Lao PDR remains understudied. This paper builds on debates related to environmental change and knowledge production and examines the socio-political construction of the current mainstream discourse on land degradation in Laos.

Ten IDRC-supported community forestry projects in six countries were selected for this synthesis study. A sizable part of the rural population in these countries are designated as ‘encroachers’ or ‘trespassers’ in the ‘forest.’ Many of these forest users claim long standing customary rights to the area, some of which are formally recognized in state law, but seldom in practice.

The conceptual difference between conventional scientific and natural resource management (NRM) research is based on the need for researchers and the NRM community to be joint learning partners in the process. “Managing Natural Resources for Development in Africa” is a collective endeavour to reframe, filter and contextualize some of the main concepts, theories and practices of NRM. It provides up to date information, and discusses approaches that can equip African graduates with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to respond to changes in social and ecological systems.

There are existing legal and legislative frameworks for citizens’ participation in decision making and development, however practice to date does not reflect effective participation of districts in central government planning, and sub-counties in district level planning. The report outlines barriers to policy development and practices as well as reparative policy reform proposals.

Een mogelijke adaptatiestrategie om de gevolgen van klimaatverandering op natuur te beperken is het realiseren van groenblauwe mantels rondom de EHS. In dit rapport wordt voor de provincie Noord-Brabant nagegaan waar groenblauwe mantels wenselijk en mogelijk zijn. De wenselijkheid wordt bepaald door verwachte knelpunten in de EHS, de mogelijkheid door de potentie van een gebied voor multifunctioneel medegebruik.

Uitgangspunt bij de visie op grondgebonden landbouw in de Randstad is, dat die grondgebonden landbouw een belangrijke drager is / blijft van de economie en de leefbaarheid van het landelijk gebied in de regio. Vraag is welke vraagstukken daarbij onderscheiden kunnen worden en welke sturingsmogelijkheden het ministerie heeft om ervoor te zorgen dat die grondgebonden landbouw die rol in de toekomst blijft vervullen

Wageningen UR (University & Research centre) en het Louis Bolk Instituut hebben in opdracht van het ministerie van Economische Zaken, Landbouw en Innovatie (EL&I), voorheen ministerie van LNV, een visie opgesteld over duurzaam bodembeheer. Ook worden bouwstenen aangedragen voor een kennisagenda. Op basis hiervan kan het beleid prioriteiten stellen voor onderzoek en kennisdoorstroming.

The aim of this paper is to show the consequences of a model extension towards the presentation of by-product in the production of biofuels. By-products can be used as a substitute for feed grain use in livestock production. A boost in biofuel production will also show a strong increase in the availability of by-products. To identify the impact of modelling biofuel production with and without presentation of by-products two different model versions have been applied.

In opdracht van de Dienst Landelijk Gebied is het ontwerp voor een robuuste ecologische verbinding tussen de Biesbosch en Loevestein / Munnikenland getoetst. Onderzocht is of de geplande verbinding aan de ontwerprichtlijnen voor robuuste verbindingen voldoet en met welke aanpassingen het functioneren van de verbindingszone eventueel zou kunnen worden verbeterd. Tevens is onderzocht of de inrichting van de robuuste verbinding aansluit bij of conflicteert met de wensen voor landschapsinrichting vanuit het herstelplan Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.

Zorgvuldige veehouderij richt zich op een modern ingericht dier-, mens- en milieuvriendelijk systeem. Nieuwe innovatieve veehouderijconcepten, zoals het Rondeel, worden ontworpen om de veehouderij klaar te stomen voor de toekomst. Maar zijn daarmee de huidige bezwaren voor de intensieve veehouderij opgelost? Nee, we vergeten iets: zorgvuldig gebruik van onze ruimte. Hoe en waar passen deze concepten in onze schaarse ruimte en welke ruimtelijke strategieën moeten we daarvoor hanteren? Een betoog over zorgvuldige landbouw en ons ruimtegebruik.
