Dryland mountains are among the least-known environments in the world, and certainly one of the most overlooked by decision- and policy-makers.

Dryland mountains have an outstanding strategic value. They act as water towers for surrounding dry lowland areas, as shown by the examples of the Rocky Mountains of North America, the Central Andes, the mountains of the Mediterranean Basin, the Sahara and Sub-Saharan Africa, West Asia, and Central Asia

Land is the foundation for all life-sustaining processes on Earth. Through its physical, chemical, and biological attributes, land underpins a wide range of ecosystem goods and services that humanity depends on for survival.

La terre — une ressource vitale pour la population mondiale

Face aux contraintes qui entravent la gestion rationnelle des ressources naturelles et de l’environnement, la Cote d’Ivoire a élaboré la Politique Nationale de l’Environnement dont l’objectif est d’assurer un environnement sain et durable et de préserver les ressources naturelles.

Face la complexité des défis à relever et de la faiblesse en ressources humaines, techniques et financières nécessaires pour faire face aux multiples préoccupations des zones qui ont été longtemps marginalisées, le Tchad a élaboré la présente Stratégie Nationale et Plan d’Actions pour la Mise en Oeuvre de l’Initiative Grande Muraille Verte au Tchad.

L’objectif général de la Stratégie et Plan d’Action pour la mise en œuvre de la Grande Muraille Verte est de créer des conditions de développement socio-économique et environnemental durables pour les populations concernées par la GMV. Spécifiquement, à court et moyen termes, elle vise à conserver, restaurer et valoriser la biodiversité et les sols; diversifier les systèmes d’exploitation; satisfaire les besoins domestiques et accroitre les revenus à travers la promotion d’activités génératrices de revenus ; et améliorer/installer les infrastructures sociales de base.

Dans le cadre de relever les défis majeurs qui persistent en matière de développement du capital humain, de consolidation de la gouvernance, de la croissance ainsi que d’autres préoccupations transversales telles que la préservation de l’environnement et la promotion du genre, le Burkina Faso a élaboré le Programme d’Actions du Gouvernement pour l’Emergence et le Développement Durable (PAGEDD) pour la période 2011-2015.

The current study attempts to examine whether large-scale agricultural investment of this type benefits the poor and how this investment can be implemented to increase benefits for the poor. It is arguable whether the poor need more land to grow crops to meet their food security requirements or need to benefit from large-scale agricultural investment in Cambodia. Although the poor households are capable of operating small plots of a few hectares each, they generally lack capital and the means to work large chunks of new land with forests or degrade forests.
