The Seventh Session (Special Meeting) of the FAO Agriculture and Land and Water Use Commission for the Near East (ALAWUC) was held in Cairo, Egypt, during 8-9 May 2012. The Opening Ceremony of the Commission was attended by (35) persons, including (20) participants from (13) Member Countries, (3) Observers representing regional organizations in the Near East; in addition to (2) Observers from Algeria and Palestine. En colaboración cone el PNUMA, la FAO ha desarrollado un marco mejorado de planificación para el desarrollo y el manejo de los recursos de la tierra que enfrenta los problemas reconocidos durante la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Ambiente y el Desarrollo, en 1992, en Río de Janeiro, Brasil. Este documento es el último de una serie de tres publicaciones, el cual introduce estos nuevos conceptos y propone un enfoque de planificación integrada para el manejo sostenible de los recursos de la tierra basado en una asociación interactiva entre los gobiernos y la población.

"Enhancing country capacity for UNFCCC reporting processes for the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use sector: Costa Rica" summarizes the support provided by FAO between 2013 and 2016 to the government of Costa Rica, through the Monitoring and Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Mitigation in Agriculture (MAGHG) project. Costa Rica was among the eighteen countries attending the Second FAO Workshop on Statistics for Greenhouse gas Emissions , held from 3 to 4 June 2013 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Forests and trees support sustainable agriculture. They stabilize soils and climate, regulate water flows, give shade and shelter, and provide a habitat for pollinators and the natural predators of agricultural pests. They also contribute to the food security of hundreds of millions of people, for whom they are important sources of food, energy and income. Yet, agriculture remains the major driver of deforestation globally, and agricultural, forestry and land policies are often at odds.

One of the legacies of saffron farming practice for centuries in and around the Pampore Karewas of Kashmir in India is that this ancient farming system continues to inspire family farmers and local communities through their livelihood security that it provides for more than 17,000 farm families. Kashmiri village women contribute to this agriculture heritage site through traditional tilling to flower picking over 3,200 hectares dedicated to the legendary saffron crop cultivation at Pampore.
