Temperate humid grazing lands are an important component of the landscape of the northeastern United States, as well as of the economy of this region. Unlike their European counterparts, little is known about the basic ecology of managed grasslands in this region. During an 8-year survey of 28 farms across the northeastern United States, we sampled the vegetation on 95 grazed plots, identifying 310 plant species, and collected data on topography, climate and soils.

Attempts to estimate the allowable maximum population density is well known in the history of game management in Latvia. Relatively permanent environmental features (e. g. landscape and forest structure) have been used for the assessment of carrying capacity of hunting grounds. Amount of the available winter feed was considered as a limiting factor for major game species in each landscape unit and forest type. While focusing on the actual abundance of feed, many other factors, including mutual interaction among species and populations, were overlooked.

The tsunami that originated from the Indian Ocean in 2004 wreaked massive destruction, killing more than 130,000 people and displacing half a million individuals in Aceh, Indonesia. More than 800 kilometers of coastline was affected, and close to 53,795 land parcels were destroyed. The land administration system sustained significant damage because documentation of land ownership was washed away along with people's houses and other possessions in the affected communities. Physical boundary markers, including trees and fences, also disappeared.

The paper aims to identify the rationality of peasant communities and their contribution to rural development in Kampong Thom province. To do so, the authors explore the dynamics of land use and land tenure, the strategies of labor force allocation as well as the determinants of land and labor agricultural productivities amongst peasant communities. The research is based on field surveys in two communes. The researchers also analysed changes based on time-series aerial photos.

Abstract: "Land-grabbing is occurring at a significant extent and pace in Southeast Asia; some of the characteristics of this land grab differ from those in regions such as Africa. At a glance, Europe is not a high profile, major driver of land-grabbing in this region, but a closer examination reveals that it nonetheless is playing a significant role. This influence is both direct and indirect, through European corporate sector and public policies, as well as through multilateral agencies within which EU states are members.

Uitgangspunt bij de visie op grondgebonden landbouw in de Randstad is, dat die grondgebonden landbouw een belangrijke drager is / blijft van de economie en de leefbaarheid van het landelijk gebied in de regio. Vraag is welke vraagstukken daarbij onderscheiden kunnen worden en welke sturingsmogelijkheden het ministerie heeft om ervoor te zorgen dat die grondgebonden landbouw die rol in de toekomst blijft vervullen

Wageningen UR (University & Research centre) en het Louis Bolk Instituut hebben in opdracht van het ministerie van Economische Zaken, Landbouw en Innovatie (EL&I), voorheen ministerie van LNV, een visie opgesteld over duurzaam bodembeheer. Ook worden bouwstenen aangedragen voor een kennisagenda. Op basis hiervan kan het beleid prioriteiten stellen voor onderzoek en kennisdoorstroming.

Deze veelomvattende studie geeft de ontwikkelingen op het gebied van onder meer klimaat, lucht en energie; verstedelijking, bereikbaarheid en milieu; landelijk gebied (met landbouw, natuur, recreatie, water, landschap) en biodiversiteit. Veel gegevens kwamen tot stand via de inzet van Wageningen UR. Deze eerste Balans van de Leefomgeving evalueert het rijksbeleid voor de fysieke leefomgeving in Nederland en geeft aan in hoeverre de beleidsdoelen voor milieu, natuur en ruimte worden gehaald. Waar dat niet het geval is, analyseren we de oorzaken.

Om te kunnen beoordelen in hoeverre bij beheerplannen van Natura 2000 gebieden sprake is van evenredige participatie, moeten de partijen in beeld worden gebracht. Dat zijn zowel de voortouwnemers, bevoegd gezag, werkgroepleden (en voorzitter), belangenorganisaties. Het betreft daarbij: rijksoverheid (Staatsbosbeheer, waterstaat, defensie), provincie, gemeente, waterschap; natuurbeschermingsorganisaties (Natuurmonumenten, Landschappen, Vogelbescherming); bedrijfsleven (landbouw, recreatie) en burgers (jagers, sportvissers)

Provincies maken bij de vormgeving en uitvoering van gebiedgericht beleid vooral gebruik van adviescommissies en nauwelijks van bestuurscommissies. Het takenpakket van de adviescommissies overstijgt in de meeste gevallen hun wettelijke bevoegdheden. Ze hebben een hoge regionale dekkingsgraad en claimen beter zicht op lokaal-specifieke omstandigheden te hebben dan de provincies zelf. De commissies houden zich met meerdere thema's bezig (waaronder natuur, landschap, landbouw, recreatie en water).

De snelle veranderingen die zich in Nederland voordoen met betrekking tot het gebruik van ruimte en de conflicterende belangen van veel gebruikers van deze ruimte, zorgen voor een voortdurende behoefte aan actuele geografische bestanden. Eén van deze bestanden is het Landelijke Grondgebruiksbestand Nederland (LGN). Sinds 1986 wordt met een periodiciteit van 3-5 jaar het LGN-bestand geproduceerd. Het LGN6-bestand is een rasterbestand met een resolutie van 25*25 m. Het bestand geeft het Nederlandse landgebruik voor de jaren 2007/2008 weer.

In 2005, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA, 2005) provided the first comprehensive report on global ecosystems, the dependence of human societies on the services provided, current state, and likely future trajectory. The MA identified the failure to value ecosystem services as a major contributing cause. The 2001 environment strategy did not explicitly address environmental valuation, although the focus on poverty and environment implies a need for valuing natural resources and environmental services.
