In October 2011, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) requested the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) to prepare "a comparative study of constraints to smallholder investment in agriculture in different contexts with policy options for addressing these constraints, taking into consideration the work done on this topic by IFAD, and by FAO in the context of COAG, and the work of other key partners.

Tanzania has a long history of sugar cane production and it has now a prioritized national policy to attract foreign investments into modern and industrial scale sugar cane production. Between 2001 and 2010, the production of sugar in Tanzania increased from 130,000 Mt pa to 280,000 Mt pa. This has been principally due to the refurbishment of four old sugar cane estates and rejuvenation of sugar cane farms. However, production capacities in existing mills are now approaching their limit and annual consumption is at 500,000 MT pa and growing rapidly.

The Effectiveness of Conservation Reserves: Land Tenure Impacts upon Biodiversity across Extensive Natural Landscapes in the Tropical Savannahs of the Northern Territory, Australia

This study examines whether there is a biodiversity benefit (“dividend”) associated with the existence and management of conservation reserves in the extensive and largely natural landscape of northern Australia. Species richness and abundance of vertebrate fauna and the intensity of a range of disturbance factors were compared across a set of 967 sampled quadrats, located either in pastoral lands, Indigenous lands or conservation reserves, with all sampled quadrats within a single vegetation type (open forests and savannah woodlands dominated by Eucalyptus miniata and/or E. tetrodonta).

The founding document of SAGCOT, the Investment Blueprint, was developed by the founding partners encompassing government, donor partners, farmers, and the private sector. The SAGCOT Investment Blueprint details the objectives of SAGCOT and how these will be achieved. This is a long-term initiative, which will take 20 years to fully implement. However, the positive impact of bringing the public and private sector together to develop agriculture is already yielding results. FAO is working with national partners to set up a sustainable system for monitoring the impact of food and agricultural policies for the first time in Africa. Through MAFAP, FAO has developed common indicators for monitoring key commodities and public expenditure in agriculture. This helps policy makers and donors understand if policies are having a positive impact and compare results across countries and over time.

Guyana’s Vision for Agriculture 2020 seeks to change the view that agriculture is for subsistence livelihood while it also seeks to promote agriculture as a wealth generator and entrepreneurial enterprise, producing food and non-food commodities to meet local and export demands.
