Livestock feeding systems and feed gaps in East African smallholder farms

Diciembre, 2020
Global

Dairy development is a promising pathway out of poverty for smallholder farmers as demand for animal-sourced foods is projected to rise. Feed is a critically limiting factor in productivity of smallholder dairy systems in East Africa. This study aims to introduce and provide proof-of-concept for a relatively simple approach to quantify feeding systems and feed gaps in data-scarce smallholder systems. Feed gap here is defined as the difference between livestock feed demand for an attainable milk production level (attainable feed demand) and actual feed supply at individual herd level.

Policy note on Kenya’s draft agriculture sector Gender Policy

Diciembre, 2020
Global

The Agriculture Sector Gender Policy has been reviewed and revised through six key thematic areas – Gender and Social Inclusion (GeSI) and the five thematic areas in Agriculture that intersect with gender, namely, Agriculture Value Chain Development (AVCD); Food and Nutrition Security (FNS); Climate Change (CC); National and Devolved Governance; and the Strategic Analysis Knowledge Support System (SAKSS), in eight Regional Economic Blocs (REB). Evidence of gender gaps and their determinants in agricultural productivity in Africa exists.

Rigorous monitoring is necessary to guide food system transformation in the countdown to the 2030 global goals

Diciembre, 2020
Global

Food systems that support healthy diets in sustainable, resilient, just, and equitable ways can engender progress in eradicating poverty and malnutrition; protecting human rights; and restoring natural resources. Food system activities have contributed to great gains for humanity but have also led to significant challenges, including hunger, poor diet quality, inequity, and threats to nature.

Business skills training guide for potato farmer organizations and cooperatives: A guide for business skills and enterprise development

Diciembre, 2020
Peru

This training guide was developed by the potato component of the Accelerated Value Chain Development
(AVCD) program with contributions from Edward Mwakio, a business skills consultant, and from county
agribusiness development officers in the six project intervention counties. Preparation of this guide is based on
the experience and the feedback from different trainers and participants.

Proposed Plan for Scaling of Climate-Smart Maps and Adaptation Plans (CS-MAP) for rice farming systems in Vietnam

Diciembre, 2020
Global

This proposal on how to integrate the development and implementation of CS-MAP into the government’s policy framework was drafted by Former Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. Bui Ba Bong. In the policy document, CS-MAP can be integrated into national and sectoral policies and plans, such as in the National Plan to adapt to climate change, Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to climate change mitigation in the agricultural sector, and in the national and regional agricultural restructuring plan for the period 2021-2025.

A critical review of the current global ex situ conservation system for plant agrobiodiversity. I. History of the development of the global system in the context of the political/legal framework and its major conservation components

Diciembre, 2020
Global

The history of ex situ conservation is relatively short, not more than a century old. During the middle of last century, triggered by the realization that genetic erosion was threatening the existing landraces and wild relatives of the major food crops, global efforts to collect and conserve the genetic diversity of these threatened resources were initiated, predominantly orchestrated by FAO.

Risk of Climate-Related Impacts on Global Rangelands - A Review and Modelling Study

Diciembre, 2020
Kenya

Climate change threatens the ability of global rangelands to provide food, support livelihoods and deliver important ecosystems services. The extent and magnitude of potential impacts are however poorly understood. In this study, we review the risk of climate impacts along the rangeland systems food supply chain. We also present results from biophysical modelling simulations and spatial data analyses to identify where and to what extent rangelands may be at climatic risk.

Stakeholders and partnership mapping, and capacity and gender gap assessment for scaling of small ruminant value chain innovations

Diciembre, 2020
Global

Small ruminant value chain development started in Ethiopia as part of Livestock and Fish CRP in 2012 in seven sites representing different regions of Ethiopia, production systems and communities. The objective of the initiative was to test technological and institutional innovations that would transform the small ruminant value chain and this involved rigorous procedures.

A Framework for Bundling Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and Climate Information Services (CIS) in Ethiopia

Diciembre, 2020
Ethiopia

Ethiopia is increasingly impacted by climate change and variability because of its greater reliance on climate-sensitive economic sectors such as agriculture. The impacts of climate change and variability are greater on a poor section of the rural community in particular because of their weak adaptive capacities. In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on promoting climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and climate information services (CIS) to improve climate risk management and adaptation of smallholders to climate change in Ethiopia.

Microcredit and savings associations for building rural household resilience: A case study of selected village development fund and savings groups in Koh Kong and Mondul Kiri, Cambodia

Diciembre, 2020
Cambodia

This case study was conducted to generate insights on the financial sustainability of selected VDFSGs and to gather information on members’ perceptions of the usefulness of these institutions in coping with household and climate change-related shocks or stresses. Financial sustainability was analyzed by conducting a detailed financial analysis of six selected VDFSGs to determine the sufficiency of interest payments as revenue to cover total costs as well as to evaluate loan recovery and equity build- up.
