This report discusses improvements of MAGNET in order to improve the analysis of land use change and forestry dynamics. In the standard approach only a difference is made between agricultural land, non-used land that can be potentially used for agriculture, and land that never can be used for agriculture. In the new approach different other land cover types like built - up area and forestry are distinguished.

Voor duurzame gebiedsontwikkeling is een balans van planet, people, profit (3P) nodig. Daarvoor heeft men weging als rechtsvindingsmethodiek nodig. Daarbij zouden ecosysteemdiensten behulpzaam kunnen zijn. Deze kunnen leiden tot duurzame functiecombinaties in het buitengebied, wat dan weer duurzame gebiedsontwikkeling garandeert. Ontbreekt een van deze schakels, dan riskeert men planologische monoculturen en enkelvoudig ruimtegebruik. Momenteel ontbreekt weging als schakel. In het groene omgevingsrecht is de sectorale toetsing nog steeds het uitgangspunt.

In de derde fase van het Deltaprogramma worden in afzonderlijke deelprogramma's mogelijke strategieën uitgewerkt tot meest kansrijke strategieën. Er wordt momenteel hard gewerkt aan de voorbereiding van een vijftal belangrijke beslissingen in 2014, de Deltabeslissingen. Ter onderbouwing van deze Deltabeslissingen worden nu strategieën uitgewerkt. In deze strategieën is het essentieel om de opgaven voor veiligheid, zoetwatervoorziening en de rol die ruimtelijke inrichting daarbij kan spelen in samenhang te benaderen.

Het agrarische gebruik heeft gevolgen voor de kwaliteit van de leefomgeving. Schaalvergroting is ook voor veel agrarische bedrijven in FoodValley een toekomststrategie. Een ander deel van de bedrijven is relatief klein, een aanzienlijk deel daarvan heeft geen opvolger. Functieverandering van agrarische bedrijven neemt een hoge vlucht en verandert het aanzien van het landschap. Bovendien ontstaan nieuwe en soms ongewenste soorten van bedrijvigheid in vrijkomende agrarische gebouwen en boerderijen. Ondanks het overwegend intensieve agrarisch gebruik, kent de Vallei ook veel "trage gebieden".

The concept of traffic calming has successfully improved road safety. This concept applied in rural areas has provided new insights in the mitigation of negative effects of roads and traffic. Earlier studies have shown that the concept, distinguishing between local access roads and rural arterial highways, also can improve landscape connectivity for wildlife. Physical speed reducing devices are frequently used in the context of traffic calming, but applying these devices may negatively impact the coherence and identity of the landscape.

This paper reports on a stated preference study of exurban Rhode Island residents that assessed the relative attractiveness of a variety of commercial and recreational land uses. Focus group participants and town planners proclaimed a demand for certain commercial developments such as grocery stores and fine-dining restaurants, but survey respondents generally exhibit a strong preference for no additional development beyond the status quo current rate of development.

This report was commissioned by the Forestry Commission to better understand the current woodland social enterprise sector in England. It provides evidence of a fledgling but very diverse sector with significant innovation. It discusses the definition of “woodland social enterprise”, the potential size of this sector, and suggests indicators for measuring future growth.

The report was commissioned by Forest Research, and reviews the data available on the management of woodlands by local authorities in England. The report focuses on the extent to which community groups and social enterprises are involved in their management.

Over the years, PINGOs Forum has been concerned with the future of Pastoral and HunterGatherer communities with regard to changing patterns of traditional land use and livelihoods options. The information gathered from the past studies have risen much concern on the side of PINGOs Forum that perhaps climate change may have a serious bearing in the land use patterns and livelihoods of Pastoralists and Hunter-gatherers. As a result of this concern, PINGOs Forum decided to embark on a study to observe changes that have occurred in land use patterns in recent years.

In northern Tanzania, new grassroots groups called Women’s Rights and Leadership Forums (WRLFs) are mobilizing women and men in pastoralist communities to promote and defend local land rights. This briefing highlights some of the WRLFs’ achievements and strategies; asks how these forums, which appear to be a part of an emerging grassroots social movement for land rights, can be further supported; and explores whether such forums could be replicated elsewhere in the region
