Most early alley cropping studies in semi-arid Kenya were on fairly flat land while there is an increase in cultivated sloping land. The effectiveness of aging contour hedgerows and grass strips for erosion control on an about 15% slope of an Alfisol was compared. The five treatments were Senna siamea hedgerows with tree prunings applied as mulch to crops (H + M), hedgerows with crops with prunings removed (H), mulch only applied to crops (M), crops with Panicum maximum grass strips (G), and a sole crop control of a rotation of maize (Zea mays) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata).

Designers, architects and planners must begin to anticipate the far reaching changes we are facing in connection with climate change. What if we take action and actively participate in the transition from fossil-fuel driven society towards a more sustainable society? This Wageningen University paper intends to discuss some of the spatial opportunities and consequences of a sustainable energy transition in relation to climate change and depletion of fossil-fuels.

Terwijl het reguliere pachtareaal al jaren daalt, is het areaal grijze pacht in de laatste 10 jaar juist toegenomen. Ook is de prijs per hectare van grijze pacht hoger dan voor reguliere pacht. Het Pachtnormenbesluit van 2001 wordt dit jaar vernieuwd, zowel qua berekeningsmethode als qua hoogte van de normen.

De landschappen in ons land zijn ‘man made’ en tot enkele decennia geleden nog met een geheel eigen ‘gezicht’. De afgelopen halve eeuw zijn er telkens schoksgewijs grote landschappelijke veranderingen aan de orde geweest door veranderingen in het landgebruik, en de effecten van klimaatverandering komen daar nog bovenop. Dit rapport gaat in op de effecten die optreden door de ‘mediterranisatie’ en zeespiegelrijzing en hoe dat doorwerkt in de identiteit van het landschap. Landschappelijke verandering mondt uit in het verloren gaan van kenmerken, maar er ontstaan ook weer nieuwe.

It has been argued that the management of land, whether at the field, farm or regional scale, can benefit from computer-based land use system analysis. As a result, a large number of computer-based models and tools have been produced over the past decades with the aim of providing support to policy and management. Though there is still optimism about the potential of land use modelling to contribute to societal problem solving, a number of scholars perceive the impact as too limited.

De vijf studiegebieden betreft de streekplannen: Noord-Holland Noord 1994, Amsterdam - Noordzeekanaalgebied 1987 en Gooi en Vechtstreek 1998; Noord-Brabant 1992; Gelderland 1996. Rondetafelbijeenkomsten zijn in de studie betrokken voor: West-Friesland, Bommelerwaard en Brummen Bronckhorst.

De Noordelijke Friese Wouden zijn aangewezen als Nationaal Landschap. Inrichting hiervan zal plaats vinden in een proces met belanghebbenden, onder wie bewoners en bezoekers. Hoe zou volgens hen het landschap eruit moeten zien en hoe kunnen de lokale actoren rekening houden met hun wensen?

This issue of Land Reform, Land Settlement and Cooperatives contains an interesting and wide-ranging set of contributions providing insights into land related issues ranging from Italy to the Central Andes, and from the historical development of sustainable tenure practices to aspects of agriculture sector planning. The eight articles featured open with that of Lavigne Delville, which addresses issues relating to insecurity of tenure in West Africa, and identifies what the paths of change currently appear to be.
