Climate change has become a significant threat to Western African countries in recent decades, including Senegal. Further, there has been an increasing occurrence of extreme events such as droughts. Droughts, directly and indirectly, have detrimental impacts on human health and often trigger nutritional status in the respective region. Children under the age of five are more vulnerable to Droughts in terms of malnutrition. In Senegal also, drought has unforeseen impacts on health systems and impacts the nutritional dynamics of children.

Co-creating nutrition-sensitive development pathways with aquatic foods: Consulting local food systems partners in Baucau and Lautem municipalities, Timor-Leste

On 23 June 2022, WorldFish held a consultation workshop in Baucau Vila to introduce its planned action research program (Box 1) in Baucau and Lautem municipalities to its diverse partners, including national, municipal and local government representatives, community members, and local and international NGOs. This brief provides a summary of the workshop and demonstrates the first steps towards co-developing a
municipality-level food systems coalition for sustainable and nutrition-sensitive transformation that includes
aquatic foods.

Engaging with partners to strengthen nutrition, livelihoods and climate adaptation research: Workshop report from Viqueque Municipality, Timor-Leste

WorldFish operates a transdisciplinary research-in-development program in Timor-Leste, hosted by the national government and the Directorate General of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Resources (DG-FAMR). Two new projects started in Viqueque Municipality in 2022, working to support aquatic foods systems with nutrition-sensitive, inclusive and climate adaptation approaches. A workshop provided a platform to engage and consult with national, municipal and local partners, stakeholders and communities, aiming to strengthen partnerships at the municipality level.

Shrimp value chains in Bangladesh: A scoping study of possible research interventions

Shrimp is Bangladesh’s main agricultural export and makes a substantial contribution to the economy of southern Bangladesh, but the sector has a checkered history. Bangladesh’s shrimp production and exports have been in steady decline, since peaking in the early 2010’s. Most shrimp exports from Bangladesh are used by the food service and niche ethnic markets in Europe.

Assessment of Belg 2023 Climate and Climate Outlook of the upcoming Kiremt 2023

In collaboration with AICCRA, EMI held a workshop to present the assessment of the Belg 2023 climate and the outlook of the upcoming Kiremt 2023. It was held within the NFCS-E framework, mainstreaming climate into key socio-economic sectors for resilience and sustainable development. It was convened on May 16, 2022, at Haile Resort, Adama, Ethiopia, and brought together 300 government officials of WoWE, EDRMC, EMI, representatives from socio-economic sectors, international partners, civic societies, and media.

Decentralized Solutions for Water Management organized at India Water Week (Nov 2022)

An insightful session on the topic “Decentralized Solutions for Water Management” was organized at India Water Week on 3rd November 2022 under CGIAR Initiative on National Policies & Strategies (NPS). The session was chaired by Dr. Anu Garg, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Water Resources, Odisha and Ms. Archana Verma, Mission Director, National Water Mission. The session emphasized the need to identify decentralized solutions for managing water through appropriate technologies and new ideas.

This workshop provided a platform for indigenous peoples’ representatives to outline their priority needs to input into Third National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP, 2023-27) that is led by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry through the Climate Change Directorate. An accelerated programme of the finalisation has targeted the government launch of the NCCAP 2023-2027 at the Africa Climate Summit, in Kenya, in September 2023.

The stakeholder identification is initiated under the CGIAR Research Initiative on Sustainable Healthy Diets through Food Systems Transformation (SHiFT) to identify with whom the project needs to engage with in order to achieve food system transformations. It brings together all the stakeholders working on food systems issues in a so-called ‘living’ database that can be used to quickly identify potential stakeholders in each of the SHIFT target countries.
