The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. We help developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. n all African towns specific modes of transport - mechanized and non- mechanized - have developed which play an essential role in distributing food between different markets and supplying the whole informal trading sector. These modes of transport, which provide an ideal service for the small volumes handled and the weak financial capacity of the wholesalers and retailers, play an essential role in maintaining low-cost inter-urban redistribution. Farmers are constantly being subjected to changes that are beyond their control on account of factors that affect the viability and profitability of their farming enterprises. Therefore in order to sustain agricultural development, farmers must acquire the capacity to respond to these changing situations and opportunities in order to maximize production. Farmers need to be helped to develop this capability by encouraging their innovations and by involving them in a learning process in which they are exposed to new knowledge and technologies.
