Mission and Vision


A just world, without poverty. That is our mission. We believe that people can build independent livelihoods, provided their rights are respected. That is why we help people around the world to stand up for their rights.


1. Right to sustainable livelihood resources

Everybody must be sure of a fair income and enough to eat. Yet this is not the case for 20% of the world’s population. That is why we are working on better access to land and water, and on fair working and trading conditions.


2. Right to basic social services

Education and health care are essential for building better societies. Yet even as we make progress towards universal primary education, around the world, there are still 130 million kids in school who fail to learn basic reading, writing and maths. When governments fail to deliver, Oxfam together with partner organizations invest in quality basic social services.


3. Right to life and security

Natural disasters, climate change and armed conflicts hit millions of people every year. We support them with relief aid and reconstruction. And we prepare people to prevent or mitigate the effects of disasters and conflicts.


4. Right to social and political participation

Knowledge is power. We believe that when people can participate in public decisions that affect them, they can build independent livelihoods and thriving communities.Together with partners we give people access to information and a voice.


5. Right to an identity

Gender inequality is both a violation of human rights and an obstacle to sustainable development. In a just world there is no place for the discrimination of women and minorities.

We are all equal, irrespective of the accident of birth, gender, faith or sexual orientation. In all our work we give special attention to the position and rights of women and minorities. And given the potentially pivotal role of women as agents of change, gender justice is at the heart of everything we do.

SEATINI UGANDA-POWER OF VOICES PARTNERSH

General

Southern and Eastern Africa Trade Information and Negotiations Institute (SEATINI) Uganda works towards a sustainable, fair and inclusive world. SEATINI undertake research and share information about policy and practices that have a direct impact on people and their livelihoods. Through raising awareness, building stakeholders’ capacity and joint advocacy, we stimulate dialogue between stakeholders and government and promote indigenous alternatives for improved livelihoods and sustainable development. The Uganda FAIR for ALL programme will be implemented by Oxfam in Uganda and partners, aiming to: 1) Enhancing women’s access to local, regional and global value chains (agriculture, specific focus on coffee and horticulture) by strengthening their organizations and capacity to influence stakeholders in value chains, including public actors, for more inclusive policies and constituencies on production practices; 2) Strengthen women’s participation and leadership through capacity strengthening of women smallholder farmer groups in negotiation skills, policy analysis and advocacy, and market and price analysis; 3) Enhancing space for CSOs, in particular regarding land rights issues. Reviving cooperatives and collective enterprises of smallholder farmer producer groups as an alternative business model to mobilize and organize small-scale food producers in agribusiness value chains; 4) Addressing human rights violations in agribusiness, with a focus on compliance with FPIC; and 5) Advocating for a fair tax system and budget transparency, paving the way for pro-poor spending, including investment in agriculture, social protection, basic services and human capital development with linkages to fair trade policies and practices. These objectives will be achieved by supporting civil society to navigate shrinking space; addressing deeply rooted cultural norms against women; strengthening CSOs’ and alliances’ influencing capacities, in particular related to land, fiscal and trade policies, inequality and exclusion; and by strengthening CSOs’ capacities to engage with the private sector. On the PvP project, SEATINI Uganda shall lead on Fair tax policy influencing at national and global levels and shall also link with work on fair trade under Third World Network Africa. Their focus shall be on Pillar 3 and Pillar 4; and the work shall complementpillar 1 and pillar 2.

CO-POWER OF VOICES PARTNERSHIP UGANDA

General

The Power of Voices Partnership (PvP) is an influencing programme with the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The programme FAIR for ALL led by Oxfam Novib is a five year long initiative implemented jointly with consortium members Huairou Commission, SOMO and Third World Network-Africa (TWN-Africa) aimed at supporting and collaborating with people’s rightful demands towards companies, governments and multilateral organizations for economic, social and environmental justice, promoting global trade and value-chains that are fair for all. The main focus of the FAIR for ALL programme is to support and strengthen CSOs to play their diverse roles; aseducators, mobilizers, creators and watchdogs to make trade and value chains FAIR for ALL. In Uganda,FAIR for ALL programme aims at strengthening CSOs to create space and mobilize demands of small-scale producers to contribute to more inclusive and sustainable agribusiness value chains (focus on agriculture, specifically coffee and horticulture) that respect land rights and promote grassroots women’s rights and economic empowerment in Uganda, and a conducive environment that promotes equal opportunities for individuals and businesses,resulting in poverty reduction, better service delivery and sustainablebusiness practices. AFCE-POWER OF VOICES PARTNERSHIP UGANDA

AFCE-Agency for Community Empowerment is a national based organisation that works with small holder farmers on agri-business value chains in westnile-Uganda. In Uganda, FAIR for ALL programme aims at strengthening CSOs to create space and mobilize demands of small-scale producers to contribute to more inclusive and sustainable agribusiness value chains (focus on agriculture, specifically coffee and horticulture) that respect land rights and promote grassroots women’s rights and economic empowerment in Uganda, and a conducive environment that promotes equal opportunities for individuals and businesses,resulting in poverty reduction, better service delivery and sustainable business practices. UAA-POWER OF VOICES PARTNERSHIP UGANDA

General

Uganda Agribusiness Alliance (UAA) was established in 2014, as a not-for-profit multi-stakeholder partnership and members-based organisation, to catalyse sustainable investment and growth in the Ugandan agricultural and agri-allied industry. We work withagriculture stakeholders to identify and coordinate solutions to address systemic bottlenecks which affect agribusiness development across the country. Where action on such solutions cannot be coordinated UAA will step in to fill the gap. Our passion is to help Ugandan agribusinesses of all sizes to thrive. We achieve this by, among others, influencing policy-making, inform business decisions, support entrepreneurial activity, share best practices, facilitate collaboration and engage stakeholders beyond commercial objectives. The Uganda FAIR for ALL programme will be implemented by Oxfam in Uganda and partners, aiming to: 1) Enhancing women’s access to local,regional and global value chains (agriculture, specific focus on coffee and horticulture) by strengthening their organizations and capacity to influence stakeholders in value chains, including public actors, for more inclusive policies and constituencies on production practices; 2) Strengthen women’s participation and leadership through capacity strengthening of women smallholder farmer groups in negotiation skills, policy analysis and advocacy, and market and price analysis; 3) Enhancing space for CSOs, in particular regarding land rights issues. UAA's contribution will be mainly on Pathway 1 and 2 of the project.

HO-RVO Pension Additional - ONL Comp.

General

The Convenant support facility is not a project but a facility where Oxfam Novib, on behalf of participating NGOs and trade unions,administers the facility. On an equal basis, Oxfam Novib also participates in the implementation of the Convenant. Specific knowledge brought in by Oxfam Novib refers to pensions in relation with gender, land rights, climate change and combat of corruption. This is the facility for additional activities that is administered separately from the general facility under A5723.The additional activities include four case studies partially implemented in Peru and Liberia, amongst others. The objective of the covenant is described, among other things, in chapter 1 of the covenant. With this Covenant, the Parties aim to prevent, mitigate and / or have remedied(or have remedied) negative consequences of investments by pension funds on society and the environment. The Parties want the agreement to fulfill the expectations for pension funds (PF) arising from the OECD guidelines and the UNGPs. In this Covenant, for example, the Parties seek cooperation in order to achieve a more sustainable society with due regard for everyone's responsibility and possibilities. The Parties have made agreements for this along a "Wide Track" and a "Deep Track". The aim of the Broad Track is to accelerate the implementation of the OECD guidelines and UNGPs throughout the sector with an approach that is applicable to all Dutch PFs. Agreements are made about this embedding in PF's policy, outsourcing to External Service Providers and monitoring and reporting by PF. In the Deep Track, the Parties involved work together on concrete Cases to mitigate and / or remedy the negative impact of companies in which PF invests. Cases with - in any case - a social component are chosen. This project supports the efforts of trade unions and NGOs in realizing concrete, executive activities resulting from their participation in the various SWG. SWG Themes; In this working group, the Parties will coordinate and work on the development, as well as highlighting and, where necessary, explaining substantive thematic frameworks, which can be used by the PF for the (further) development of their thematic policy. SWG Knowledge Sessions and Meetings: for the support of PF (and implementers) in the implementation of the Covenant. Initially, the knowledge sessionsare focused on the implementation of the Instrumentarium and the due diligence cycle in general. At a later stage, specialist knowledge sessions will follow with attention to specific due diligence steps (such as, for example, Recovery and Redress) and use of thematic examples to elaborate on the details and possible dilemmas surrounding the various due diligence steps. SWG Editing and Support: this SWG has the task ofupdating the Instrumentarium annually, and is also charged with providing support to PF and disseminatingthe Instrumentarium. SWG Cases: for each Case, an SWG will be compiled of interested Parties in the Case concerned. These SWG carryout a validationof the must-have criteria, draw up a cooperation plan that addresses, among other things, the joint objectives and strategy, the Engagement goals and questions (Asks) of the pension fund (concrete measures in relation to the negative impacts) , the rolesand responsibilities of the Parties, the planning and staffing. After approval of the cooperation plan by the Werkgroep DiepeSpoor, implementation will start. Annually, the SWG uses their Cases to identify and document strategic insights and lessons. Attheconclusion of Cases, a workshop is organized for this reflection with external experts, specifically examining policy implications.The Parties strive to document the lessons and insights about the Deep Track in publications. The SWG reports its final findings tothe Monitoring Committee and the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee in turn is considering these findings to draw up recommendations for the Broad Track activities. For example, the lessons learned from the Deep Track are included intheinstruments to be developed and / or their application.
