Great Britain formally acquired Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both world wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964; a decade later it declared itself a republic. Since about the mid-1980s, the island has transformed itself into a freight transshipment point, a financial center, and a tourist destination while its key industries moved toward more service-oriented activities. Malta became an EU member in May 2004 and began using the euro as currency in 2008.

Displaying 36 - 40 of 47Land Acquisition (Public Purposes) Ordinance.
The Ordinance lays down rules governing the acquisition of land for public purposes, which means any purpose connected with exclusive government use or general public use. The President of Malta may by declaration signed by him declare any land to be required for a public purpose. Moreover, the President of Malta may for any public purpose declare by proclamation that any land is subject to clearance rights or to subsoil rights.
Disposal of Government Land Act.
The present Act makes provision in matter of transfer or grant on any title of immovable property which belongs to or is administered by the Government. The disposal of land belonging to or administered by the Government shall not take place unless such disposal is made as follows: (a) in accordance with a call for tenders; (b) in accordance with a policy applicable to the land proposed to be disposed of and approved by a resolution of the House of Representatives; (c) through a special resolution of the House of Representatives; (d) to a body corporate established by law.
Commissioner of Land Ordinance.
On the basis of the present Ordinance, all rights and liabilities, whether vested or contingent, relating to immovable property belonging to, or possessed, held or administered by the Government, or relating to the administration thereof, to which the Accountant General was entitled shall be transferred to the Commissioner of Land.
Agricultural Leases Regulations.
These Regulations make provision on leases relative to agricultural lands. The Registrar of the Superior Courts is designated to be the Registrar of the Board in regard to any proceedings which concern land situated in the Island of Malta. With respect to proceedings concerning land situated in the Island of Gozo or Comino, however, the Registrar of the Court of Magistrates of Gozo shall have such competence. Regulation 4 defines the content of applications to the Board.
Land Registration Act.
The Act provides for the establishment in Malta of the Land Registry for the purposes of registration of title to land. The Act consists of sixty sections divided into the following ten Parts: (I) Preliminary; (II) Administrative provisions; (III) Registration of land; (IV) Dealings with registered land; (V) Cautions; (VA) Cautionary charges; (VI) Land and charge certificates; (VII) General provisions concerning registration; (VIII) Rectification of Register and indemnity; (IX) Miscellaneous provisions; (X) Rules and fees orders.
