Desde sus orígenes, el desarrollo de la agricultura ha estado estrechamente ligado al trabajo de la mujer. Su contribución a la agricultura se remonta a más de 6 000 años, cuando se inició la domesticación de animales y plantas en los primeros asentamientos humanos. Con el paso del tiempo, con la división del trabajo y de responsabilidades tanto en el seno de la unidad familiar como en la comunidad, se asignaron a las mujeres las tareas y responsabilidades vinculadas a las actividades agrícolas y nutricionales.

La situation mondiale de l’alimentation et de l’agriculture 2002 est le rapport annuel de la FAO sur les nouvelles tendances et les problèmes courants de l’agriculture mondiale. Il examine la situation agricole dans le monde et l’environnement économique global dans lequel s’inscrit aujourd’hui l’agriculture mondiale, _ et propose cette année un tour d’horizon du déroulement des négociations _ sur le commerce international des produits agricoles à la suite du lancement d’un nouveau cycle de négociations commerciales multilatérales de l’Organisation mondiale du commerce.

In this issue, we will be introducing the new Land tenure e-journal, which has just launched its first issue. This e-journal is dedicated to land-related issues, including land tenure. We will also learn about the recently issued report, the State of the World’s plant genetic resources for food and agriculture and we will introduce you to the new web site gearing up for the 2012 event marking the twentieth anniversary of the Earth Summit - FAO@Rio+20.

FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and other development partners are working together with countries to prepare Voluntary Guidelines that will provide practical guidance to states, civil society, the private sector, donors and development specialists on the responsible governance of tenure. By setting out principles and internationally accepted standards for responsible practices, the Voluntary Guidelines will provide a framework and point of reference that stakeholders can use when developing their own policies and actions.

This publication contains four in-depth reviews on current and emerging issues in the economic analysis of food, agriculture and rural development, written by well-known scholars in the field. The selection of the issues for in-depth review was the result of a survey conducted among FAO staff involved in policy assistance activities in the main developing regions. Thus, the choice reflects their and, by extension, the policy-makers' perception as to the main research priorities in the economic analysis of agriculture, rural development, poverty and food security.

El acceso a la tierra es indispensable para la producción de alimentos y la generación de ingresos. Asimismo, constituye un bien social y económico decisivo, que reviste una importancia crucial para la identidad cultural, el poder político y la participación en el proceso de toma de decisiones. Las creencias sociales y culturales suelen dar lugar a discriminación contra las personas por motivos de género, clase social o grupo étnico.

Cette publication contient quatre études approfondies sur les questions actuelles et nouvelles d’analyse économique de l’alimentation, de l’agriculture et du développement rural, qui sont l’œuvre de grands noms dans ce domaine. La sélection des questions à approfondir a été le résultat d’une enquête conduite auprès du personnel de la FAO s’occupant d’activités d’assistance de politique dans les principales régions en développement.

Land Tenure Working Paper 18. Presents the main themes that characterize the governance in land tenure and analyses the aspects related to the evolution of agricultural policy issues in various Central American countries. It also offers some examples and lessons learned from new models of land administration and land access mechanisms that Central American governments and International Cooperation have fostered over the past fifteen years in the Region.
