Identifying recommendation domains for targeting dual-purpose maize-based interventions in crop-livestock systems in East Africa

Conference Papers & Reports
Junho, 2008
África
África Oriental

Livestock are recognized as essential assets for the livelihoods of poor farmers in the mixed crop-livestock systems throughout the tropics, while feed resources have been identified as an important constraint to their productivity. Two international agricultural research institutes, CIMMYT and ILRI, therefore joined forces in a project designed to improve the value of maize as livestock feed with an aim of enhancing the livelihoods of maize-livestock farmers in East-Africa.

ILCA. 1991: annual report and programme highlights

Reports & Research
Dezembro, 1992

This report presents some of the highlights of ILCA's research and training and information programme. The highlight described for the Cattle Milk and Meat Thrust focuses on helping national agricultural research systems (NARS) make better use of their livestock production data. The highlights of both the Small Ruminant Meat and Milk Thrust and the Animal Traction Thrust center on crop-livestock integration, integrating forage legumes into the farming systems of the Sahel and the subhumid zone of West Africa. The traction thrust focuses on ILCA's work in the Ethiopian highlands.

ILRI 1996. Out of Africa, into a global mandate

Reports & Research
Dezembro, 1997

ILRI's mandate encompasses international livestock research through the developing world. This report makes the connection between research by ILRI and its partners and the needs of poor farmers in developing countries. The assessment of Asian animal agriculture indicates that the most significant and sustainable increases in livestock production are likely to come from mixed crop-livestock systems in rainfed and irrigated areas in South Asia.
