The resilience of rangeland soils and vegetation to different levels of grazing is still poorly understood. A study was conducted to determine the recovery of a rangeland grazed at different intensities and allowed a two-year rest period. The following treatments were applied to 0.5 hectare plots: 0, 4, 8 and 16 heifers per hectare, hereafter referred to as CL, X, 2X and 4X respectively.

The report is divided in 12 sections. The first section is introductory. The second section presents research on animal health of working animals. Diversified uses of animal traction including animal-powered rice-huller, weed control are discussed in the 3rd section. The fourth section looks into harnessing and implements used in the different regions of West Africa. The management and nutrition of working animals is discussed in the fifth and sixth sections.

The Third Annual CCAFS Science Workshop focused on consolidating research and fostering
collaboration across the CGIAR. Day?1 plenary presentations along four themes identified
issues including:
• Opportunities to deliver messages to UNFCCC through SBSTA;
• The challenges of communicating science;
• The multiple scales of climate variability, stakeholder engagement, and adaptation options;
• Whether adaptation and mitigation are synergistic or conflicting;
