This first edition of a synthesis document, compiling a status of forest genetic resources in the Sahelian and North-Sudanian zone of Africa and a sub-regional action plan for the sustainable management of these resources, is the fruit of a process undertaken at the initiative of countries in the sub-region, towards a better consideration of the important but complex issues linked to forest genetic resources.

Hydroponically grown radish (Raphanus sativus) sprouts served in school lunch were epidemiologically implicated as causative vehicle of Escherichia coli O157:H7 at the largest outbreak occurred in Sakai City, Japan, in 1996. Laboratory experiments suggested the possibility that E. coli O157:H7 had grown during radish sprouts production.

The paper briefly reviews the mandates and main activities of some major governmental and non-governmental international organizations concerned with the management of forest genetic resources, and the role that such organizations play in this field. It is noted that national forest genetic programmes will continue to constitute the building blocks of regional and global programmes, but that these can be usefully complemented by harmonization of action at international level.

Les déficits pluviométriques périodiques ainsi que les fortes pressions humaines et animales dues à une croissance démographique élevée ont eu des impacts néfastes sur la plupart des écosystèmes et certaines espèces forestières. Différentes actions ont été réalisées afin de tenter de reconstituer le milieu naturel mais sans grande efficacité. La conservation et la gestion rationnelle figurent au nombre des options stratégiques adoptées afin de restaurer l’équilibre écologique, bien qu’elles soient toutefois limitées pour diverses raisons.
