Most activities that support economic growth in the São Francisco Riber Basin (Brazil) need water. Allocation of the water resources to each competing use needs quantification in order to develop an integrated water management plan. Irrigation agriculture is the largest water consuming activity in the basin. It has produced large economic and social advancements in the region and has potential for further development. The local development agency in the São Francisco River has projected an increase of more than 500,000ha in irrigation developments distributed within the basin.

The Piracicaba, Capivari and Jundiaí River Basins (RB-PCJ) are located in the States of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, Brazil. By 2005, 5.8% of Brazil's General National Product-GNP was produced there. Such economic development has created a huge demand for water resources. The availability of water resources was assessed by running a dynamic systems simulation model to manage these resources in the RB-PCJ (WRM-PCJ), considering five 50-year simulations. WRM-PCJ was developed as a tool to aid the RB-PCJ Watershed Committee.

Samenvattend leidt de monitoring van larven en poppen van steekmuggen rondom de herinrichtingsgebieden Peize en Roden-Norg in de periode mei-oktober 2008 tot de conclusie dat er momenteel geen sprake is van het optreden van eventuele overlast van steekmuggen. De mogelijke broedlocaties zijn spaarzaam in het gebied aanwezig en de daarin voorkomende steekmuggen zijn veelal laag in aantal. De larven en poppen van huissteekmuggen (Culex en Culiseta (Culiseta)) zijn het meest talrijk aanwezig in de herinrichtingsgebieden. Ze zijn van juni tot en met september aangetroffen.

This report has three objectives: 1. To synthesise and analyse the current water resources management policy environment as it pertains to engaging community structures in development planning, 2. To describe and comparatively analyse the social, structural and operational characteristics of traditional water management institutions around the country, 3. Drawing upon these findings, to analyse the principal opportunities and challenges of using community institutions within formal water rights management structures.

Water scarcity is considered to be one of the largest threats for many parts of Africa. Under water scarce conditions reducing the consumption of water and preventing pollution of accessible water resources is essential. Combating water scarcity in both dimensions of quality and quantity is of special relevance for the LNV priority regions (including those in Water Mondiaal). Future LNV policies to address food security in Africa will affect the use, spread and fate of agrochemicals as well.

ICARDA has long-standing outreach programs in North Africa, the Nile Valley, and the Red Sea region (Fig 2). In its current strategic plan, the Center will extend its work to the drylands of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Noord- en Midden-Limburg kennen een ontginningsgeschiedenis waarbij de eisen van landbouwkundig gebruik voorop hebben gestaan. Afvoer van overtollig water stond centraal. De natuurlijke beken zijn daarbij niet gespaard. Ook die moesten worden gekanaliseerd om aan de afvoernorm te voldoen. De samenleving stelt nu andere eisen aan de leefomgeving en dus ook aan het grondgebruik. Ruimtelijke ordeningsplannen met hernieuwde functietoekenning en daarop afgestemde herinrichtingprojecten zijn aan de orde van de dag. Meanderende beken terug in het landschap zijn het resultaat.

Ter ondersteuning van de politiek bestuurlijke besluitvorming over de toekomst van het Volkerak-Zoommeer heeft het nationaal onderzoekprogramma Kennis voor Klimaat de wetenschappelijke kennis en inzichten, die hiervoor van belang zijn, op een rijtje gezet. In deze studie is de nadruk gelegd op de lange termijn: in hoeverre past het zout maken van het Volkerak-Zoommeer in een lange termijn strategie voor klimaatadaptatie.

Land owners who offer blue services make their land available for activities such as water conservation, peak-flow storage or the containment of the rise of the groundwater level, and receive payments that exceed the compensation for incurred costs. The Netherlands is a pioneer in the concept of blue services, but other European countries may also offer possibilities for such activities. There are a number of institutional factors that either hamper or stimulate the realisation of blue services.
