The Kenya Land Alliance (KLA) is a not-for-profit and non-partisan umbrella network of Civil Society Organisations and Individuals committed to effective advocacy for the reform of policies and laws governing land in Kenya. KLA was founded in 1999 and registered as a Trust in 2001. The initiative to create an institutional framework for land laws and policy advocacy in Kenya was necessitated by the realization that the policy, legal and institutional framework created in 1950’s had become inadequate due to many changes in the social, political, economic and cultural fronts that had occurred in the country over the years.
The increased population has resulted in intense competition for access to land and natural resources. In addition, changes in the global environment brought about by globalization have combined to create a reality that is significantly different from the one existing when the
current framework was created in the 1950s. It is on this premise that KLA has been in the forefront in efforts towards effective advocacy for land laws and policy reforms in Kenya, as recently witnessed in the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Land Law System of
Kenya and the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission. Advocating for the formulation and implementation of a National Land Policy and review of land laws.

The KLA proposed constitutional principles on land reform as captured in the constitutional draft have become more pronounced with the approach of General Elections and the transition that is expected to see the departure of President Moi from leadership. We therefore, detest the frantic efforts to go to the forthcoming elections before adopting the Ghai draft constitution, because that will be endangering the aroused expectation that at long last we are on the road to sorting out land problems we have lived with since independence.

The Kenya Land Alliance (KLA) is a focal point for information sharing and networking among those pressing for land reform in Kenya. It was formed in 1999 by members of civil society to propose reforms both to the Commission on the Review of Land Laws, appointed by the President, and the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission, appointed by Parliament. Over the last two years, the KLA has coordinated a programme of research on land issues in Kenya by member organisations
Land Use in Kenya: the Case for a National Land Use Policy
Contains an introduction on land use in Kenya, followed by chapters on land resources, land abuse, emerging trends, and towards a national land use policy. The Alliance has taken up the challenge to undertake a social audit of natural resources to put the case for a national land use policy, spelling out how land and other natural resources should be used and managed in a sustainable manner.

The first volume in a series of KLA proposals on legislative and policy framework principles designed to assist Kenyan citizens to contribute to the land and constitutional review processes, Focuses on key issues of public land management and administration. Argues that indigenous land use systems should be formally recognised by law and makes a number of specific recommendations designed to secure greater accountability.
