- Ecoregion protection statistics, 2019
The European Commission's Digital Observatory for Protected Areas (DOPA) provides a number of relevant indicators at ecoregion level. Those biogeographic units describe areas of land or water which contain a distinct association of natural communities sharing a large majority of species and environmental conditions. They are classified into 14 different biomes such as forests, grasslands, or deserts. In the Geoportal you may display the protection statistics for 867 terrestrial ecoregions, referring to the Terrestrial Ecoregions of the World (TEOW) defined by Olsen et al. (2001) and Spalding et al. (2007); You can view the coverage of the terrestrial and marine ecoregions of the world by protected areas (lakes, rock and ice are excluded). The layer displays protection levels for January, 2019.

The EU is strongly committed to strengthening the instruments for achieving the global biodiversity targets and to making sure that these are effectively implemented. To ensure transparency and reusability of our work, the DOPA has been developed using open standards for spatial data and using open source programming languages.
