Degradação e Posse da Terra

Um terço dos solos do mundo - incluindo terras agrícolas, florestas, serras e solos urbanos - já estão degradados e estima-se que este número possa aumentar para quase 90% até 2050. Geralmente, a erosão do solo é entendida como a remoção acelerada da camada superficial da terra através da água, vento ou cultivo, resultando na sua degradação. Além disso, a degradação do solo também inclui mudanças deteriorantes nas propriedades biofísicas e químicas do solo, da água e da biodiversidade. A degradação da terra ocorre naturalmente, mas as pesquisas mostram que a degradação da terra é cada vez mais causada direta ou indiretamente por atividades humanas insustentáveis, notadamente desmatamento, sobrepastoreio, mineração ou agricultura intensiva . Isto tem impulsionado a perda da biodiversidade, a desertificação e levado a um aumento significativo das emissões de gases de efeito estufa .
